What kinds of cases require Critical Care?

Critical Care is designed for pets who are unstable, rapidly changing, or need continuous monitoring and advanced support. These are often serious conditions where timing and close observation make a meaningful difference.

Some of the more common cases we see include:
• Hit by car or traumatic injuries
• Severe toxic exposures (rodenticide, medications, mushrooms)
• Difficulty breathing or respiratory distress
• Sepsis or severe infections
• Cluster seizures or neurologic emergencies
• Heart failure or other cardiac conditions
• Kidney failure or inability to urinate
• Severe vomiting and diarrhea (gastroenteritis)

At Beacon, these patients are cared for under the guidance of Dr. Lindsay Cuddy, DVM, DACVECC, a board-certified specialist in Emergency and Critical Care, with continuous monitoring and the ability to respond quickly as conditions change.

📞 If your pet is experiencing a serious or rapidly worsening condition, call us at (510) 657-6343.

What does “Critical Care” actually mean?

Critical Care is for patients who are unstable or require intensive monitoring and advanced support beyond standard hospitalization. These are often pets experiencing life-threatening conditions or recovering from serious emergencies.

At Beacon, our Critical Care team provides continuous monitoring, advanced therapies, and ongoing reassessment to support patients through every stage of stabilization and recovery.

Summer tends to bring more opportunities for pets to get into things they shouldn’t.

From backyard products to medications and seasonal toxins like mushrooms, exposures aren’t always obvious—and symptoms don’t always show up right away.

Some cases require more than just initial treatment. When pets need ongoing monitoring, IV support, or repeat labs, they may be hospitalized under Critical Care to watch for changes and respond quickly. If something seems off or you’re unsure what your pet got into, it’s always worth having them evaluated. You can reach our team at (510) 657-6343.

Would you know if your pet needed Critical Care?

Some of the most serious conditions we treat don’t always look urgent at first—but can change quickly without close monitoring and support. From trauma and toxic exposures to breathing emergencies and severe infections, these are cases where timing and continuous care matter.

At Beacon, our critical care team—led by a board-certified criticalist (DACVECC)—is here when that higher level of care is needed.

With longer days and more time outdoors, summer often brings an increase in “hit by car” injuries.

While we hope this never happens to your pet, these situations can change quickly—even when pets seem okay at first. Internal injuries and complications aren’t always immediately visible and may require close monitoring and rapid intervention.

Simple steps like keeping pets on a leash, ensuring fences and gates are secure, and being mindful around busy streets can help reduce risk.

At Beacon, our Critical Care team—led by a board-certified criticalist (DACVECC)—provides ICU-level support for trauma patients when the need arises, helping detect complications early and guide recovery.
