Today is World Mosquito Day! 🦟

While we humans worry about itchy bites (and that annoying buzz in our ear!) mosquitoes pose a much bigger threat to our furry family members: heartworm disease.

It only takes one bite from an infected mosquito to transmit this serious, potentially fatal condition to your dog or cat. Because treatment can be risky, stressful, and expensive, prevention is by far the BEST approach for all pets.

Remember, to keep them safe, pets also need a quick heartworm test once per year to ensure they are negative before continuing their preventative medication.

If your pet has a short nose and a flat face, they belong to a group known as brachycephalic (meaning "short-headed") breeds. Extra precautions must be taken with our smooshy faced friends - see graphics.

While these physical traits are incredibly endearing, the shortened skull shape unfortunately puts them at a higher risk for serious medical issues, including brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).

Our dog model for this post is Miss Tillie. Her family has always rescued English Bulldogs and they are very familiar with the care and attention that brachycephalic dogs require.
