🪰🐴 Mane Event Monday: Fly Control Tips 🐴🪰

Flies are more than just a nuisance — they can cause irritation, stress, skin problems, and even spread disease to horses. Keeping flies under control helps your horse stay healthier and more comfortable all summer long!

Here are a few helpful fly control tips for the barn and pasture:

✅ Remove manure regularly to reduce breeding areas
✅ Eliminate standing water around stalls and paddocks
✅ Use fly masks and fly sheets for extra protection
✅ Keep barns well ventilated with fans to discourage flies
✅ Rotate and properly apply fly sprays as directed
✅ Consider investing in a fly spraying system for your barn
✅ Mow pastures and remove decaying organic material

• Head shaking

It’s Mane Event Monday! 🐴✨
Memorial Day Edition!

Feel the past meet the present as we honor the nations fallen!

At the heart of military honors and remembrance stands one of the most solemn and respected units in the United States Army — the Caisson Detachment of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard).

This elite unit carries out one of the most sacred duties in military tradition: providing full honors funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. When a fallen service member is laid to rest, the Caisson Detachment ensures that it is done with dignity, precision, and respect.

🐴 What is a Caisson?
A caisson is a horse-drawn wagon originally designed to carry artillery ammunition. Today, it is used in military funerals to carry the casket of a fallen soldier along their final journey. The sight of a riderless horse following the caisson symbolizes a warrior who will ride no more — a powerful tribute steeped in history and honor.

📜 A Legacy Rooted in History
The tradition of horse-drawn caissons dates back to the early 1800s. The U.S. Army officially adopted horse-drawn es**rt elements for funerals to reflect both battlefield heritage and ceremonial respect. The modern Caisson Detachment continues this legacy as part of “The Old Guard,” the Army’s official ceremonial unit, whose mission is to represent the United States and honor its fallen heroes.

Each soldier and horse in the detachment undergoes extensive training. The bond between the horse and their handler is essential — they work as a team to ensure every ceremony is carried out flawlessly, even under emotionally heavy conditions.

To learn more and take a deeper look into the subject, listen to Lieutenant Colonel Branden Quintana and World Renown Four in Hand Champion, Chester Weber explain on this two-part podcast series:

🇺🇸 A Final Salute
Every mission of the Caisson Detachment is a reminder of sacrifice, service, and honor. They do not just perform ceremonies — they preserve a tradition that ensures no fallen soldier is ever forgotten.

We are forever grateful for their dedication and for the lives they honor every day.

Lyme Disease Prevention Month

April is Lyme Disease Prevention Month — and yes, horses are at risk too!

Lyme disease is transmitted through the bite of infected ticks and can affect your horse’s comfort, performance, and overall health if left untreated.

Tick season has officially started! We’ve already pulled our first tick of the season here at Westview, so now is the time to start thinking about prevention.

Signs to watch for in horses:
• Stiffness or shifting lameness
• Sensitivity to touch
• Behavioral changes or irritability
• Decreased performance
• Fever or lethargy

How to help protect your horse:
Perform daily tick checks (especially mane, tail, underbelly, and between legs)
Keep pastures mowed and fence lines clear
Reduce brush and wooded exposure when possible
Ask us about tick control options for your horse and property

Early detection and prevention make all the difference!

Contact us today if you have concerns or want to discuss protection options for your horse.
