This handsome boy was struggling with impulse control. When staff would go to leash him, he would become mouthy & when he was leashed, he would grab/pull on the leash. These behaviors are common in shelter dogs especially the longer they remain at the shelter due to high levels of stress.

Working on these behaviors is not only beneficial for the dogs but for staff as well. Making for easier, more enjoyable walks for everyone!

Let’s make some mental enrichment boxes for shelter dogs!

These boxes are easy to make for your own pup! All you need is a small box, some kibble and/or treats, a toy & a washcloth.

We put a variety of items in the box to give the dogs plenty of mental stimulation! We wrap kibble in the washcloth so it becomes a good puzzle & works their nose! Just fold up the flaps of the box but not too much as you want your dog to still be able to get into the box.

Choose items that interest your pup or try something new inside!

Always monitor your pups to make sure they don’t ingest things they shouldn’t & to clean up those items right away.

When we started working at our local animal shelter years ago, we saw firsthand how many people wanted to return or surrender their dog due to behavioral issues. Where we lived at that time, there weren’t many resources for dog training so we started our business to help the community!
It’s important for us to keep families together & we never want price to be a reason you can’t get the help that’s needed. 🐕💙

Living circumstances and finances can often lead to owner surrenders of animals. But behavior issues are also a big reason for pet surrenders.

A common issue we work on with shelter dogs is behavior when getting them out of their kennel.

Due to their environment, dogs, especially pitties, often become kennel stressed which leads to over-arousal, mouthing & jumping.
These behaviors can make handling difficult & deter potential adopters.

We have 2 goals in mind when we start this training - getting the dogs in the habit of moving away from the kennel door when it opens & to sit or be on all fours when being leashed & before they leave their kennel.

We throw treats to the back of the kennel to teach them to move away from the door. We also break down entering their kennel into multiple steps. Arousal often begins when a person arrives at their kennel door & they anticipate being taken out. This means we start there & then work on the rest of the process of opening the door & entering the kennel.

Here is a little throwback to some work I did with Ringo! Ringo was a shelter dog who struggled with overexcitement, jumping & mouthing. Staff & volunteers had a hard time handling him especially when taking him out of his kennel. Ringo was very intelligent, which only made matters harder for him. We worked on automatic sits, “off” & walking sits. The goal is to have him make the choice to sit on his own so he would continue that behavior for staff & walking sits help him focus on making that choice even in exciting scenarios.
