💚 WORLD MENTAL HEALTH DAY 💚
🐾 The Side of Veterinary Medicine You Don’t Always See
People often say, “You must have the best job in the world, getting to play with puppies and kittens all day!”
And while there are plenty of cuddles, wagging tails, and happy moments, there’s another side of veterinary medicine that many people never see.
The emotional side.
The side where we fight to save a life, knowing that sometimes, despite everything we do, we won’t succeed.
The side where we hold back tears while helping a family say their final goodbye.
The side where we comfort an animal during their final moments, making sure they feel safe, loved, and never alone.
And then, just minutes later, we walk into the next exam room with a smile because another patient needs us.
💚 This is where compassion fatigue comes in.
Caring deeply, witnessing suffering, experiencing loss, and carrying the emotional weight of it all can take a toll.
We remember the patients we couldn’t save. We remember the families who cried. And sometimes, those losses follow us home.
Euthanasia is not a failure. Sometimes, helping an animal pass peacefully is the greatest act of compassion we can offer. But knowing it’s the kindest decision doesn’t make it hurt any less.
On World Mental Health Day, we want to remind our fellow veterinary professionals:
You are allowed to be exhausted.
You are allowed to grieve.
You are allowed to ask for help.
And you deserve the same compassion you give so freely to others.
To our clients, thank you for your kindness, patience, and understanding. Sometimes, a simple thank-you means more than you realize.
🐾 Behind every set of scrubs is a human being with a heart. And sometimes, those hearts get tired, too. 💚
From all of us at PetMedic Urgent Care Freeport, remember to take care of those who spend their lives caring for others.
