‘Tis the season! Painted turtles are out and about and you may see them in your yard, even if you are not directly adjacent to water. Female turtles leave the water and come ashore to dig a nest in the soil or sand. They lay a clutch of eggs, cover the nest to conceal it from predators, and return to the water. The eggs are then left to incubate. This is a painted turtle in Dr. Redfield’s back yard. This video shows her laying 2 of her eggs. They will lay from 2 to 20 eggs that will then incubate from 60 to 90 days. Average is 72. If you see a turtle doing her thing, leave her alone. Keep your distance, quietly, and use zoom on your camera. If you want, you can take steps to protect the clutch from predators.
