Why we stopped calling ourselves dog trainers.

For a long time, “dog training” was the easiest way to explain what we did.

Eventually, it stopped being accurate.

The more dogs we worked with, the less interested we became in asking, How do we make this dog stop doing that? We became much more interested in understanding what was happening underneath the behavior.

Fear. Stress. Frustration. Pain. Environment. Relationships. Movement. Choice. Sleep. Health. History. A nervous system that may have been working overtime for far too long.

Dogs learn, of course. But we no longer believe a dog’s life should revolve around becoming more obedient, more convenient, or easier for humans to manage.

Our work became about relationship.

About helping people understand the dog they actually have. About giving dogs more agency. About recognizing when behavior is communication instead of something that needs to be corrected. About supporting the mental and emotional health of dogs living in a world that asks an enormous amount of them.

So we stopped calling ourselves dog trainers.

Not because behavior stopped mattering.

Because the dog became bigger than the behavior.

Stillness is not always calm.

A dog sitting quietly in the corner is not always a calm dog.

Sometimes they’re observing. Sometimes they’re resting. And sometimes they’ve stopped trying to participate because the environment feels like too much.

At Woof Houze, we pay attention to the difference.

We look at movement, posture, breathing, recovery, choice, willingness to explore, how a dog responds to touch, how quickly they can come back down after stress, and whether they actually feel safe enough to engage with the world around them.

“They were quiet” and “they were comfortable” are not the same thing.

The mental health of the modern dog deserves more attention than whether they caused a problem.

That is something we’re going to talk about a lot more here.

Hank came to see us all the way from Raleigh, North Carolina with his guardians, Meg and Dave, for a Be Brave™ Muzzle Fitting, and I’m so thankful they made the trip.

Hank is a beautiful five-year-old English Lab, and although our time together was far too short, he was an absolute joy.

At Woof Houze, we are true muzzle advocates.

A muzzle fitting is not about slapping something on a dog’s face and sending them on their way. It is about trust, relationship, and helping a dog feel safe with something that may one day be important for their health, management, behavior, or safety.

We believe every dog living in the modern world should have a relationship with the right type of muzzle before they ever truly need one.

That also means fit matters. A dog should be able to fully pant, breathe comfortably, and have the space they need. We do not support muzzles that unnecessarily restrict a dog or compromise comfort.

Our fittings are also about the dog in front of us. We educate guardians on what their dog is communicating, how to continue the process at home, and how to build confidence without force or rushing.

And our support does not end when you leave.

Hank came to see us from Raleigh, North Carolina, with his guardians, Meg and Dave, for a Be Brave™ Muzzle Fitting.

He’s a beautiful five-year-old English Lab, and although we only had a few hours together, I was genuinely thankful they made the trip and sought out the kind of support they wanted for him. Hank was incredible, and like every dog who comes through our doors, he had plenty to tell us about what felt comfortable, what didn’t, and how quickly he was willing to trust us.

We are true muzzle advocates at Woof Houze.

There are so many reasons a dog may need a muzzle at some point in their life. It may be for management. It may be health-related. It may be behavioral. It may be because they’re injured, frightened, in pain, or suddenly in a situation where they need support they’ve never needed before.

That’s why we believe every dog living in this modern world should have a healthy relationship with the right kind of muzzle before they ever truly need one.

A Be Brave™ fitting is not about walking into a room, measuring a dog’s face and strapping something on.

It’s about relationship.

Can this dog feel safe with us near their face? Can they investigate the muzzle without pressure? Can we build enough trust to touch, measure, adjust and fit something on one of the most sensitive parts of their body? Can we help them learn that putting their face into a muzzle doesn’t mean they’ve lost all choice?

And when that muzzle goes on, can they fully pant, breathe comfortably, take treats, drink when appropriate and move their jaw naturally?

Those things matter.

We do not support restrictive muzzles that hold a dog’s mouth closed for routine wear, and we do not use equipment simply because it technically fits around the dog’s face. Comfort, function, appropriate pant room and the individual dog in front of us all matter when we choose and fit a muzzle.

We also spend time with the guardians. Not talking about “dogs like yours.” Talking about your dog. What we noticed. What Hank communicated. How to continue building the relationship at home, how to introduce the muzzle without rushing, and what to watch for as they move forward.

And our support doesn’t end when you leave the building.

Our first Whisper Walk™ of the year gave us exactly what we needed a cool breeze, happy dogs, plenty of sniffing, and a quiet morning outside together.

And we get to do it again this Sunday.

Our RWC Member Whisper Walk™ is a chance to slow things down and give our dogs room to move, explore, take in the environment, and walk alongside one another without the pressure of a traditional group walk.

No rushing. No forced interaction. No expectation that every dog move or experience the morning the same way.

Just dogs, their people, and some much-needed time outside.

Something special is taking shape inside Woof Houze.

If you’ve known our founder, Adia, through her work with dogs, there’s a part of her story you may not know.

Long before Woof Houze, she was also a culinary graduate with a dream of one day bringing her love of food and her life’s work with dogs together.

That dream is now becoming Hound & Crumb — Dog Bakery + Café, an independently branded business whose first location will call Woof Houze home.

And for Adia, beginning here felt fitting.

Woof Houze is where she has spent years creating experiences centered around how dogs feel, move, connect, and experience the world. Now, within these same walls, Hound & Crumb will carry that care into food and hospitality creating a place intentionally made for dogs and the people who love them.

Today, the first Hound & Crumb bakery case arrived.

Adia recorded this while out on WagTime strolls, in the middle of her workday, as the weight of that moment started to sink in. It was emotional. It was joyful. And we thought it was worth sharing exactly as it happened.

Hound & Crumb is its own business, with its own identity and its own future. We’re simply proud that Woof Houze gets to be where its story begins.

Happy Fall from all of us at Woof Houze. 🍂🐾

Mila says…Cooler mornings. Longer sniffing. Crunchy leaves. Muddy paws. More time outside and a whole new season of things for our dogs to explore.

Around here, fall means getting back outside, moving more, slowing down when we need to, and letting dogs enjoy everything this season has to offer.

We’ve got a lot coming to RWC this fall, and we’re excited to experience it with you and your dogs.

Happy first day of fall, Fredericksburg.
