Fredericksburg dog guardians, are you & your dog prepared for unexpected wildlife encounters?

We met these guys on a hiking trail, but a former client’s dog recently encountered a skunk in their own backyard on Caroline Street! Thankfully, we worked on “Leave It” and “Come” when I trained their dog 2 years ago. I’m pleased to say their dog DID NOT get sprayed & returned to her guardian when they cued her to “Leave It” and “Come”.

Your dog doesn’t have to go everywhere with you. 🐾

Sometimes the kindest thing you can do is leave them home.

🚫 Skip the adventure if it’s:

🔥 Too Hot — If pavement burns your hand, it burns their paws. If it’s over 80°F, think twice.

👥 Too Crowded — Festivals, parades, packed patios. Overstimulation isn’t fun — it’s stressful.

❓ Too Unfamiliar — New environments + new people + new dogs = recipe for overwhelm. Build up slowly.

🚗 Too Far — Long car rides without proper prep can create anxiety and carsickness.

Bringing your dog should make their day better — not just yours.

This one could save your dog’s life. 🚨

Heatstroke in dogs can happen fast. We’re talking under an hour. And without shade, water, and rest, it can be fatal.

Here’s what to watch for:

🔴 Excessive panting
🔴 Red gums
🔴 Fast heart rate
🔴 Vomiting or diarrhea (with or without blood)
🔴 Stumbling, weakness, collapse
🔴 Seizures

If you see ANY of these signs, don’t wait. Get your dog to the emergency vet immediately. This is not a “wait and see” situation.

The best defense? Prevention.

☀️ Skip midday walks when it’s hot
💧 Always have fresh water available
🌳 Make sure there’s shade
🐕 Know your dog’s limits. Some breeds overheat faster

Before every walk on a hot day, do the 7-second test.

Press the back of your hand to the pavement.

If you can’t hold it there for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Pavement can reach 130°F+ when the air is only 85°F.

That’s hot enough to burn skin, and your dog doesn’t have shoes.

Walk early. Walk late. Stick to grass when you can. Maybe even drive to a nearby grassy park for your walks?

July 4th is less than a month away. If your dog panics during fireworks, the time to act is NOW, not the day of.

Call your vet this week and ask about anxiety medication options.

Some meds require starting days in advance. Some need a trial run to get the dosage right. Waiting until July 3rd is too late.

Your dog can’t tell you they’re terrified. You should already know from previous experience.

Whether you’re heading out of town for a night or a week, here’s what to pack in your dog’s overnight bag so your sitter has everything they need:

🧳 The Essentials:
✅ Enough food for the stay + 1-2 extra days (just in case) & their feeding schedule

✅ Their regular treats

✅ Any medications with clear dosing instructions

✅ Leash, collar, and harness they’re used to

✅ P**p bags

✅ Emergency contact & your dog’s vet information

✅ Any information regarding your dog’s behavior: do they need to avoid other dogs, or do they have a quirky bedtime routine?

✅ An unwashed blanket or shirt with your scent can provide comfort to your dog in your absence.
