Every October, American Humane Society celebrates Adopt-A-Dog Month®, the national initiative we launched in 1981 to inspire families to adopt a dog from a local shelter or rescue organization. For more than 40 years, the campaign has highlighted the importance of adoption, helping connect deserving dogs with loving families while encouraging responsible, lifelong pet ownership.

Why adopt a dog?
Choosing adoption gives a deserving dog a second chance while making room for another animal in need. Whether you’re looking for an energetic hiking companion, a playful family dog, or a calm senior friend, shelters and rescue organizations have dogs of every age, size, and personality.

Many adopted dogs:

Are already socialized or house-trained
Have received vaccinations, spay/neuter services, and veterinary care
Are ready to become loving, lifelong companions
Is adopting a dog right for you?
Bringing home a dog is rewarding, but it’s also a long-term commitment. Before adopting, consider:

Your lifestyle and daily schedule
Your living space and activity level
The time needed for training, exercise, and companionship
Ongoing costs like food, veterinary care, and supplies
Preparing ahead of time helps create a smooth transition for both you and your new best friend.

Think of Me as Your Big Sister: Internal Medicine Skills Coaching for GPs

You know the case. The cat who hasn't eaten in four days. The dog with a cough that won't quit and radiographs that raise more questions than they answer. The mass that showed up on ultrasound right before lunch.

Sometimes referral is exactly the right call. Sometimes the family can't make that trip, or the next referral appointment is weeks out. And sometimes you know you could do more for this pet today, if you'd had a few more reps and someone in your corner.

I'm Jessica Larson, a board-certified small animal internal medicine specialist and founder of Music City Pet Internal Medicine. Much of my work now is coaching general practitioners, usually early- to mid-career, as they add internal medicine skills that make a real difference in patient care.

Think of me as your big sister
The easiest way to describe what I do: I'm your big sister in internal medicine.

In practice, that means I come to you. I help you build skills that already sit within general practice scope, but that most of us never got enough repetitions with in school or in our first jobs. I'm there for the everyday cases and for the ones that get hard. I'm not here to take over, and I'll never make you feel small for asking. Big sisters have already been through it. That's the whole point.

How the coaching works
I blend two kinds of learning because each does what the other can't.

Simulated learning with purpose-built models. I design, build, and test procedural models for specific skills: models you can place a feeding tube in, guide a needle into, or run a BAL sequence on. You learn the hand skills and step order with no patient at risk, and you repeat them until your hands know what to do.

Live cases in your own hospital. Then we take it to the real thing: your patients, your equipment, your team, your workflow. I'm right beside you while you do the procedure. We talk through patient selection, what to tell the family, how to handle the sample, and what comes next. Skills learned in your own building tend to stick because you'll use them there on Monday.

I'll bring the lunch money.
