Had a good weekend with friends and family. Bonnie got to find one and we got a good puppy track for Buck.

For those that don’t know, Maggie had a close call this weekend. She spent almost 3 days at the vet getting blood transfusions after taking an antler through the mouth and through the base of the tongue. She doesn’t have a spleen anymore which makes a heavy bleeding injury hard for her to overcome. After $5,000 and a lot of thought, im going to retire her and let her live the rest of her life in peace. Doing what we do, you bleed a lot and she just can’t handle it anymore. She has almost given her life for me and the hunters we work for many a time in her life. She taught me everything I know about tracking and the good lord knows I’m going to miss her expertise. She’s earned her retirement. We have a good 4 year old dog on the ground eager to take the spot of lead dog and we will have pups on the ground (courtesy of Maggie) this offseason. Triple D lives on, but it’s sure going to hurt me to not load my ace in the hole into the box when I get a phone call. If you see the old brindle dog in the back of my truck in town, give her a pat on the head and a thank you for her many years of service and lots of blood shed for me and every person she’s helped throughout the years.

Took 2 tracks this weekend and put 2 bucks on the tailgate. Bonnie found one that ended up being easy, and Maggie found one that a group of house dogs chased across 3 properties and a highway. The good lord sure has blessed me with some fine hounds.

A true testimate of how tough these deer are….

We tracked this deer 10 days ago after almost 4” of rain. Maggie took the trail through a patch of woods and we had to call her off because we didn’t have permission on a neighbors property and we were right by a few houses. Fast forward to yesterday morning and they found him in a tank freshly dead. Even the bucks cape was still good. The wound finally got festered enough to make him sick and he went to water and couldn’t get out. I wish we would have gotten the opportunity to catch up to him ourselves the night we tracked him, but glad it all worked out for the hunter in the end. Congrats Troy on a hell of a buck!

It’s been fairly slow this season, but we went 2 for 3 on opening weekend of rifle. First deer was gut shot DOA, and the second had a broke leg and had to be caught.

I have talked to many folks, and most don’t realize youth rifle opens TOMORROW, Friday October 24th- Sunday October 26th.

As the rifles start coming out, the wait times to track go down and we get busy at times. Do your due diligence to find your deer, but know when to call a dog.

If you find bone on the trail back out and call a dog immediately. It is almost always leg bone. The chances of you getting a second shot on a broke leg deer are slim but the recovery rate for a good dog on a broke leg deer are high.

If you find gut matter on the trail BACK OUT. Even if you don’t want to call in a dog yet, you need to give the deer some time to get sick and expire. If you track a gut shot too early they can go a longggggggg way before bedding backdown. Gut shots often don’t bleed much but there is a lot of scent being left behind and a good dog can make quick work out of it if you haven’t bumped him out of the country.

If you jump your deer out of bed while tracking it, mark the spot and call a dog. Most deer travel a good distance after being bumped out of bed and every time you jump him your chance at a recovery goes down significantly.

Took Bonnie to Maysfield this morning to trail one up. It was slow going because of the heat by the time we got there but she got it worked out. For those that don’t know, Maggie got too hot running a buck last weekend. Took her in and ended up finding a huge mass on her spleen. She will be down healing for the next month. Me and Bonnie are still rolling though.

Slow opening weekend but we got on the board last night with a cool triple beam buck. 26 hour old gut shot. Both dogs hammered the track out and got a good little tune up after a long offseason.

If you look closely you can see me wiping my mouth with my shirt. That buck was pretty ripe and gurgled in my face when I flipped him over and I lost my pizza I had for dinner 😂

Our favorite time of year is right around the corner! The girls are tuned up, legged up, and chomping at the bit to find some deer. If you or anyone else cant find a deer, knows the shot was marginal, or is unsure of what happened, give us a call day or night. Most trackers see more wounded deer in a season than the average hunter does in a lifetime. If you hunt in the area we serve, save our number, and send it to your friends and family. We are available 24 hours a day, weekdays, weekends, and holidays.

It’s a good feeling to see Maggie back to doing what she loves. Surgery kept her down for over 2 weeks, but she didn’t miss a beat. Deer was shot last night and tracked first thing this morning. Thank you Kevin for the referral.

We finally got a hometown track yesterday. It’s a pretty cool feeling getting to help out a family you grew up around. Humidity wasn’t on our side, trailing was hard, but Bonnie showed out on her first public track. It was definitely a team effort, but Bonnie got him jumped, ran him 200, and bayed him solid on her own. Maggie is still lead dog, no doubt, but I’m excited to see what Bonnie is going to do!
