Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

At VCA West Coast, we love a good success story! Meet Shug (like "Sugar"), a 12yr old male/neutered Domestic Short Hair.
Shug came to our Neurology team after his family noticed progressive weakness in his back legs. What started as a stiff left hind leg gradually affected both legs over the course of several weeks, until he could no longer stand on his own.
He had an MRI performed and it revealed a spinal meningioma, a benign tumor arising from the tissues surrounding the spinal cord. Surgical intervention was recommended as the treatment of choice in hopes to improve his current neurologic deficits and to stop further worsening in the near future. On 6/9/26, our neurology team performed surgery to remove the mass with a dorsal laminectomy.
Just four weeks later, Shug returned for his recheck with an incredible transformation. He was running, jumping, and back to being his normal self. He showed no signs of pain and only slight incoordination. He is once again enjoying time exploring his favorite spots in the backyard.

We couldn’t be happier to see this handsome boy back on all four paws. Huge shout out to Dr. Ancona and the rest of the neurology team for their incredible skills and care to get Shug literally back on his feet again!

Happy Veterinarian Appreciation Day! VCA West Coast would like to say Thank You, to all the amazing doctors we have here! Your skills and compassion are exceptional, and we are grateful for the dedication you give to the pets and their owners in the community. Part of our celebration included Hawaiian shirt day and Hawaiian BBQ. Please enjoy the best photo of the day by our radiation oncology team. Not only did Dr Wakamatasu and her team sport shirts, but their adorable patient, Simone did as well! Simone just completed her 16th radiation treatment for a pituitary tumor, and she is doing great! Way to go Simone! And thanks again to all our fabulous doctors for all you do!
