Wild birds have a way of exposing every hole in a dog’s training. The missed recall. The extra step on point. The chase after the flush. The dog that hunts for itself instead of hunting with you.

From young dogs learning their first lessons to experienced dogs being polished for the season ahead, our training is built around patience, fundamentals, bird exposure, and putting dogs in situations that prepare them for the real thing.

After a mild winter followed by a summer of record-breaking wildfires, upland bird populations are holding steady in the state but locally affected by the fires. Hunters will still find abundant populations across the state due to good overwinter survival but should expect to find fewer juveniles pe...

Anyone care to guess the breed?

First introductions aren’t about asking for much. They’re about building confidence. Arthur’s first lessons around water were simple, let him explore, let him get wet, and let curiosity do most of the teaching.

North Dakota. South Dakota. Wild birds. We still have room to take a few dogs into training now, giving them a month to prepare before joining us in North Dakota and South Dakota.

Five weeks from now, a launcher in the grass will be replaced by miles of prairie, wild birds that don’t wait around for mistakes, and opportunities that have to be earned.

Between now and then, there’s work to do. A month to build the foundation, sharpen the details, and prepare dogs for the lessons that only wild country can provide.

We spend a lot of time talking about developing young dogs, but the old ones deserve their reps too. Years of experience doesn’t replace the fundamentals, and a thousand birds doesn't mean there isn’t something to learn from the next one.

It feels like yesterday that Ransom was just a puppy, I don't know how seven years snuck up on us.

Wild birds are the finest teachers, but a young dog doesn’t have to meet them unprepared. A controlled environment gives us the opportunity to build confidence, shape good habits, and let instinct develop without asking for too much, too soon.

Some hunts are measured in miles, others in minutes. Less than fifteen minutes from the truck, and four sharpies found their way into the vest in under sixty seconds. After all the empty miles Montana gave us this trip, this was one of those moments when the prairie decided to be generous.

I’ve got a feeling I could hunt sharptails the rest of my life and never see it happen quite like this again.

The prairie has a way of punishing impatience. One sharptail rises, one barrel fires, and instinct says to break the gun and replace the spent shell. Somewhere between reaching for a fresh one and closing the action, another bird comes from the sage. Sometimes there’s no right answer, only the one you make in the moment.

Do you reload after the first shot, or keep walking with one barrel left?

The last sunset from camp always seems to linger a little longer.

Tomorrow morning, we’ll shoulder the guns, turn the dogs loose, and hunt one last piece of Montana before pointing the truck west toward Oregon. Tonight, though, we're just chasing a fading western sky, tired dogs, and one last night in camp.

The prairie hasn’t given much away this year. Sharptails have been few, the miles long, and most days have asked more of the dogs than they’ve offered in return.

Then came one of those mornings that reminds you why you do it. Good dog work, birds where they ought to be, and a Montana limit in less than two hours.

After a week of searching, it felt good to finally find them. Public land hunting definitely has its struggles but the reward is the reminder of why we do it.
