Hello from Kramer Cottages Labrador Retrievers!
My husband and I have been in the Breeding business for quite some time and are quite proud of what we do. We have been so blessed over the years to place our puppies with fantastic families. However, one thing has become a “constant” if you will, with regards to the people who contact us, and that is the at times, immovable consistency of color. I noticed this in the past but it seems to be getting more and more prevalent. We had a potential customer who stated that they “always had a Yellow and that’s what they were sticking with, period.” So, I took the opportunity to question him on this and this is what I have discovered. People in general seem to be “comparison persons.” I am guilty that when my children were born, of quizzically wondering why one did not act like the other. Some were satisfied to play alone for hours whilst others had to be entertained. Some were more easily potty trained, and some became verbal earlier than other siblings. Point being is that everyone and every animal is different. I asked the gentleman I was talking to, “Even though you get the same color of Lab ‘everytime’, do you find yourself comparing him or her to your previous animal with regards to temperament or hitting milestones,” to which he replied that he did. My response to him was, “Then you are not being fair to your puppy.” Every animal will be different and because of this, it shouldn’t be compared to previously loved family members. I urge you to consider NOT getting the same color that you had had before but to perhaps “change it up a bit.” Whilst all Labs are wonderful loving family pets, they are all distinctly different. Finally, I convinced this gentleman to take a black lab from our litter. The feedback has been phenomenal. He discovered that this current puppy had a totally different personality than his previous dog but he was able to accept this more readily, and be able to enjoy his current puppy whilst still remembering his precious animal dearly. Some people will simply stay the course and continue to get puppy after puppy of the same color, but I do urge all potential Labrador owners that when it comes time to introduce a new pet, that you step out of your comfort zone and try something a bit different. You’ll be pleased and feel blessed that you did. ❤️🐶
