Why are responsibly bred puppies so expensive? 🐾
Many people don’t realize just how much goes into raising a litter, and this applies across breeds. Responsible breeders aren’t just charging for a puppy. We’re investing countless hours, sleepless nights, and so much love into making sure these babies have the best possible start in life.
You never know what each litter is going to bring. Sometimes, everything goes smoothly. Other times, you have tiny puppies who need round-the-clock care just to get strong enough to survive on their own.
I’m currently raising a litter for someone else, and I have one darling little girl who needs to be tube-fed every 2–3 hours. I’m going to share a video of the process so you can see a little of what goes on behind the scenes.
For these first days and often into a week or two, this will mean and has meant feeding her around the clock. Each feeding takes about 30 minutes between preparation and the feeding itself, leaving us with only about an hour and a half before it’s time to start all over again. Sleep becomes a luxury, and every waking moment revolves around keeping these precious babies alive and thriving.
This is the part of responsible breeding that most people never see. The worry, the exhaustion, the constant monitoring, and the emotional investment in every tiny life. We do it because these puppies depend on us, and we will do everything we can to give them a chance.
So when you’re considering the cost of a responsibly bred puppy, remember that you’re not just paying for a puppy. You’re also paying for the care, knowledge, time, commitment, and countless sacrifices that go into raising that puppy.
There is so much more to ethical breeding than putting two dogs together and waiting for puppies. ❤️🐶
