lan. The first phase, African Savanna, opened in 2018; the second phase, Elephant Springs, opened in April 2021. The third, Hunters of Africa and Asian Predators, is currently under construction and set to open in 2023. The institution’s focus on education and conservation is second to none, enhancing the lives of more than 1 million visitors a year. An update from the St. Louis Zoo! Gus and Bukavu are settling in at their new home and getting acquainted with their new troop! 🦍💚

In July, Gus and Bukavu moved to the St. Louis Zoo to join a bachelor troop made up of other juvenile male gorillas. Though their presence is missed here in Fort Worth, this is the natural progression for male gorillas as they continue to mature.

By living in a bachelor troop with other young males, Gus and Bukavu are forming social bonds and learning behaviors critical to becoming mature adult silverbacks and perhaps one day, having their own troop later in life.

We are only two weeks out from our fourth annual Deaf Day in partnership with the Sign Language Interpreting Program at TCC! 🎉

On Saturday, Sept. 19, we invite members of Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities, and their friends and families, to join us for a fully accessible day at the Zoo! On Deaf Day, American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters from TCC will be stationed at zookeeper chats, giraffe feeding and various restaurant and merchandise locations throughout the Zoo.

Just rolling onto your feed with Crockett, the mud-wallowing black rhino! 🦏

Wallowing in mud helps him control his temperature and keep cool on these warm Texas days. When the mud dries, it also protects his skin from the sun’s rays and pesky bugs!

Our southern black rhinos now alternate between their main habitat yard (the one you can see!) and additional outdoor and indoor spaces (behind the scenes!). As is natural for their species, Crockett and Muke typically prefer to be in their own spaces while remaining in close proximity to one another. Their separate outdoor yards neighbor, which allows them to spend time together along their shared border!

It’s International Primate Day! We’ve got an update to share about construction and future plans for some of the primates that call the Fort Worth Zoo home! 🦍🦧🐒

The second phase of the World of Primates revitalization is nearly underway for our western lowland gorilla habitat! A construction fence is going up this week in preparation for construction to begin. In the beginning stages, gorillas will remain in their outdoor habitat and visible to guests through the outdoor habitat windows. Eventually, they will transition to their indoor habitat and an outdoor behind-the-scenes yard. 

As recently announced, this revitalization will nearly double the size of our current gorilla habitat. This added space will encourage natural behaviors by providing more enriching climbing opportunities and enhancing the well-being of our beloved gorilla troop!

To celebrate the last day of Asian Elephant Awareness Month, we’d love to introduce you to the rare multi-generation herd that calls the Fort Worth Zoo home! 🎉🐘🎊

We’ve spent this month celebrating and honoring our Asian elephant herd, along with the conservation efforts made by the Zoo to protect and care for this species. 

Beyond this month, the Zoo continues to make strides in the conservation of this species, including the most recent opening of the Center for Applied Reproductive & Emerging Sciences (CARES) Lab. The CARES Lab acts as a regional research center for reproductive science, with flagship research focusing on elephants.

The Zoo is one of few in the world to house a three-generation herd – with four generations of Fort Worth Zoo elephants across North America. Stay tuned to meet our herd!

Beginning tomorrow, Aug. 31, Zoo operating hours are:

Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Saturday and Sunday: 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Safari Splash will continue to be open daily through Sept. 7!

Tomorrow is Chantek’s, one of the four Sumatran orangutans at the Zoo, 51st birthday! 🥳🦧🎉
 
Chantek, along with PT, are both over 50 years old –– reaching this extraordinary age is a testament to the care provided by our dedicated keepers and animal care team.  
 
Chantek enjoys melons and ice treats as enriching snacks on warm Texas days!

As she ages, Chantek enjoys her quiet outside time –– whether it be napping under warm sunrays or people-watching in the World of Primates.

After a five-year hiatus, zebras are back at the Zoo! Please welcome our newest additions, Hercules and Pegasus.   
 
The two juvenile half-brothers can now be seen in their new habitat nestled between the hippos and flamingos in the African Savanna. For now, they will have access to their barn while they acclimate to their new surroundings.   
  
Fun fact: Zebras had been a mainstay at the Zoo for nearly a century until their departure five years ago to make way for what is now the lion habitat in Predators of Africa and Asia. The first zebra arrived at the Fort Worth Zoo in 1923, and the species remained until 2021.

Every dog has his day –– even African painted dogs! 😉

Nearly a century ago, the estimated wild African painted dog population was 500,000. Today, about 6,600 painted dogs are left outside of managed care. Threats to this endangered species include habitat fragmentation, human-animal conflict and viral diseases.  

Yesterday, on World African Painted Dog Day, we celebrated this incredible species and the Zoo’s efforts to care for our pack that serves as ambassadors for their wild counterparts.
