🍂🐾 FALL FUN FOR DOGS: WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR! 🐾🍂
Cooler walks, new scents, and outdoor adventures—autumn can be a wonderful season for our pups! At Dotson Dot’s & Brother Link Kennels, we encourage families to enjoy the season while keeping curious noses away from these hazards. 🧡🐶
🌼 DANGEROUS PLANTS & FLOWERS
• Chrysanthemums (mums): These popular fall flowers are toxic to dogs if eaten and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and unsteadiness.
• Autumn crocus (Colchicum): This flower is highly toxic and can cause severe illness, including organ damage. Suspected ingestion needs immediate veterinary attention.
• Tulip and daffodil bulbs: If you’re planting for spring, keep bulbs away from digging dogs. Both plants are toxic, with the greatest risk concentrated in their bulbs.
🍄 WATCH WHAT’S ON THE GROUND
• Wild mushrooms: Some can cause life-threatening poisoning, and identifying safe varieties is difficult. Keep your dog from eating any wild mushrooms.
• Acorns: Chewing or swallowing them can cause stomach upset, choking, or an intestinal blockage.
• Moldy leaf piles, compost, and rotting decorations: Decaying material can contain toxins that cause tremors or seizures. Keep dogs from eating old pumpkins, moldy food, or compost.
🧪 FALL CHEMICALS TO KEEP OUT OF REACH
• Antifreeze: Products containing ethylene glycol can be deadly even in small amounts. Secure containers, clean spills promptly, and keep pups away from vehicle leaks.
• Rat and mouse poisons: These can cause serious or fatal poisoning. Keep all bait inaccessible to pets.
• Fertilizers, w**d killers, and insecticides: Risk depends on the product and exposure. Store them securely and follow every label instruction, including when pets can safely return to treated areas. “Organic” fertilizer does not automatically mean safe to eat.
🎾 MAKE AUTUMN ADVENTURES SAFER
✅ Check your yard before playtime.
✅ Supervise outdoor exploring and practice “leave it.”
✅ Choose walks, fetch, and sniffing games in clear, inspected areas.
✅ Identify plants before adding them to your home or garden.
✅ Keep garden products and garage chemicals in secure storage.
🚨 IF YOU SUSPECT POISONING, ACT QUICKLY
Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 immediately—even if your dog seems fine. Save the product packaging or take a photo of the plant to help identify it. Do not induce vomiting or give home remedies unless a veterinary professional directs you. If your dog is having seizures, trouble breathing, or is unconscious, go directly to an emergency veterinarian.
🍁 A little preparation helps keep fall full of happy adventures and wagging tails!
