🤍🐾 Helping children say goodbye to a beloved pet
At Beloved Bond, Dr. Aubrey Berridge encourages parents to be honest, compassionate, and open when talking with children about a pet's illness and saying goodbye.
Many children benefit from being included in age-appropriate conversations, having the opportunity to ask questions, share favorite memories, draw pictures, write letters, or simply spend quiet time with their beloved companion.
It's important to remember that children often grieve differently from adults. Some may cry
openly, while others may continue playing, ask the same questions repeatedly, or express their
emotions in unexpected ways. All of these responses can be normal.
Most importantly, remind children that they are loved, that their feelings matter, and that the
bond they shared with their pet will always remain an important part of your family's story.
While saying goodbye is never easy, helping children feel included, supported, and heard can make this difficult experience a little less overwhelming for the entire family.
