I spy with my little eye...a resilient reptile! 👀🐊
Classified as endangered in the mid-1960s due to overhunting, this reptilian received national protection through the Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966 and the Endangered Species Act of 1973! Their depleted numbers steadily rose as these acts stopped the commercial trading of all alligator products.
Native to the southeastern United States, the American alligator has always played a crucial role in their ecosystem! Using self-made burrows for nesting and warmth, this reptile species eventually moves on to another spaces within their environment. The abandoned burrows are utilized by a multitude of other species, all of whom would be affected by the loss of American alligators in the natural world.
