We’ve got plenty of work to do at the new Clothes For Joes building, and we need volunteers for indoor work, outdoor projects, cleaning, and more!

Please note that we will be closed on Tuesday, August 11, from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM as we gather to celebrate and recognize our amazing summer team before they head back to school to continue their education.

We are incredibly grateful for the hard work, compassion, and dedication each of our summer staff members has shown during their time with us through the years. They have made a lasting impact on our team, our clients, and the pets we care for every day.

🌞🐾 SUMMER HEAT WARNING: your pet did NOT sign up for this weather forecast🥵

Hot days can turn dangerous for pets faster than most people expect. Heat stroke can happen in minutes, not hours, and it often sneaks up during “just a quick walk” or “they’ll be fine in the yard.”
Pets don’t cool themselves efficiently. Panting is their main system, and when the air is hot, still, or humid… that system starts to fail.

🚨 Heat stroke red flags:
Heavy, loud, or nonstop panting
Excess drooling
Weakness, staggering, or sudden collapse
Vomiting or diarrhea
Bright red gums or very pale gums
Acting confused, anxious, or “not themselves”

🐶 Special warning: flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds
French Bulldogs, Pugs, English Bulldogs, Boxers, Shih Tzus, and similar breeds are at much higher risk. Their shorter airways make breathing less efficient, which means they can overheat quickly—even on shorter walks or mild activity days.

🌫️ Don’t underestimate humidity
Humidity doesn’t just make it “feel worse” to us—it directly interferes with how pets cool down. Panting relies on evaporation, and when the air is already saturated with moisture, that cooling system slows way down.

In simple terms: high humidity can make a 78° day behave like a much hotter one for your pet’s body.

☀️ Prevention that actually helps:

Walk during cooler parts of the day only (early AM or late PM)
Keep activity light or skip it on hot/humid days
Provide constant shade and fresh water
Avoid hot surfaces (pavement can burn paws quickly)
Never leave pets in vehicles—even “for a minute”

🚑 If you suspect heat stroke:
This is an emergency. Move your pet to a cool, shaded area, begin cooling with cool (not icy) water, and head to a veterinary clinic immediately.

When in doubt, err on the side of caution—we’d always rather check them over than see them come in too late.

🎆 Fireworks Season PSA from Your FWPH Veterinary Team 🎆

We love a good celebration… but many of our patients would strongly vote to cancel fireworks altogether 🐾

If your dog becomes anxious, trembles, hides, or tries to become one with the bathtub during fireworks season, now is the time to plan ahead—not the night of July 3rd in a panic. WE ARE CLOSED SATURDAY!

✨ Medications like trazodone often need to be prescribed or refilled in advance, so don’t wait until the fireworks start lighting up the sky. There is also protocol for helping them before the booms.

But meds are just one piece of the comfort puzzle. Here are other ways to help your pet ride out the boom-storm:

🌙 Create a “safe bunker”
-A quiet interior room with no windows (bathrooms/closets work great), or make sure blinds are closed
-Add blankets, beds, or a crate if they already like it

🔊 Drown out the chaos
-White noise machines, fans, or calming music playlists (classical, reggae, or “Through a Dog’s Ears” style audio)
-TV or radio for familiar background sound

🦺 Pressure & comfort tools
-Thunder shirts or snug-fitting anxiety wraps
-Extra cuddling if your pet seeks it (or nearby calm presence if they don’t)

🌿 Calming aids (ask us what’s appropriate for your pet)
-Pheromone diffusers/sprays (like dog-appeasing pheromones)
-Calming chews or supplements (varies by patient—check first)

🚶‍♂️ Exercise earlier in the day
-A good long walk or play session before the fireworks start can help take the edge off

IDENTIFICATION:
-Make sure your pet's collar has your phone number in case they bolt away, even with a sharpie marker will work
-Leash walk only outside this week in case they get spooked and take off, even if you have a fenced in backyard. Scared dogs are notorious for being able to find a way out when terrified.
-Make sure your pet has a microchip / you know the number in case they get lost. Also, you could make note on pets collar that the pet is chipped, again even with a sharpie marker

And don’t forget: Fireworks aren’t the only summer hazard lurking in the background 👀

🔥 Summer BBQ & Holiday Dangers to watch for:

-Corn cobs (classic GI obstruction culprit)
-Bones, skewers, and grill scraps
-Onions, garlic, grapes, and anything heavily seasoned
-Alcohol left within reach (even small amounts are toxic)
-Sunscreen, bug spray, citronella products
-Glow sticks (tempting but irritating if chewed)
-Hot grills and fire pits (burn risk + curiosity magnet)
-Heat stroke from overexertion in warm weather

🌡️ Check the surface temperature of pavement before walks, if it is hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws, stay in the grass or get socks or shoes. Monitor on any foot ware as this can be ingested/eaten and cause a blockage

🚧 Road Closure Notice 🚧

Westbound traffic on W. Cook Rd. is closed between Huguenard Rd. and Lima Rd. through Friday, July 10 as crews complete Phase One of the street reconstruction project.

Please plan ahead, use an alternate route, and allow extra travel time if you’re driving in the area. We appreciate your patience and cooperation while these improvements are underway.

On Monday we will pause and be grateful to all who made the ultimate sacrifice and honor those families and friends who lost their loved ones. Emergency services hours are listed on our website.
