In 2004, Dr. Monger, Director of International Veterinary Consultants (IVC), observed surgical training at The University of El Salvador, College of Veterinary Medicine. The approach to anesthesia and surgery was difficult to watch.
Dr. Monger and her team were invited back the following year to give surgical demonstrations. Maria Vargas and Francis Alvarenga were veterinary students at the demonstration and recognized the deficiencies in their training.
This was the beginning of the evolution of the current teaching program and humane surgical services now taught in the veterinary college, overseen by Dr. Vargas in surgery and Dr. Alvarenga in anesthesia. They are joined by former students, now veterinarians, who embody mentorship and value the ability to provide knowledge and training for future Salvadoran veterinarians as well as services to the underserved population through their community sterilization campaigns.
Although Dr. Monger and her teams laid the ground work for training, this program is what it is today by their dedication to provision of education and training, often in the face of adversity (that’s putting it mildly). IVC is incredibly proud to recognize and support this program.
