Tank's cycled. Now what? This week's question: when does Step 2 start?

Once your Step 1 salt is set, the cycle finished correctly, and your inhabitants are healthy. Step 2 then gives the next stretch a job: setting your nutrient targets and putting methods in place to control them.

What was the first thing you tested after your cycle finished?

Nuisance algae in a brand-new reef tank? That can be normal.

The Aqua Care Guide calls it the “ugly stage,” while the system settles after cycling. Add fish slowly so the bacteria can keep up, and keep your adjustments small.

New tank, fresh saltwater, and the urge to start cycling today.

Hold off until you've chosen your salt. Each Quantum salt comes with its own targets, and getting the water to those levels before you cycle helps reduce the bacterial die-off that may restart the cycle.

Already have a reef tank up and running? This week's question: do you still start at Step 1?

You do. Your salt is the foundation for everything else, and its parameters become your targets for the rest of your reef keeping. Already cycled? Skip cycling and go straight from Step 1 to Step 2.

What would you check first in your tank?

Calcium looks like it's disappearing? Check your phosphate first.

Calcium bound to phosphate leaves the water, so it looks as if your corals are using more than they are. Dose more to make up for it, and you can create even more bound phosphate.

Testing low on phosphate and still having problems?

Phosphate can bind with calcium on your live rock, where a standard test can't detect it, and it makes your corals look like they're using more calcium than they are. Our new article walks through the five Reef Essential® steps and why they run in order.

After the storm: test ammonia and nitrite first, before you change anything.

If either reads above zero, do a partial water change with fully prepared water, not a full one. Don't scrub or replace all your filter media, because the bacteria live there. Water Primer detoxifies ammonia while you work: up to 25 mL per 300 L (79 gal) of aquarium water for an ammonia or nitrite spike. It's a stopgap, so keep testing.

Hurricane Isaias is moving through the Southeast. Stay safe.

Stay inside, follow your local officials, and check on your neighbors. The tank can wait. We're based in Crestview, and we're here when you're ready, whenever that is.
