Tis the season... for escape artists 🦊

If your fox, raccoon, or skunk has suddenly lost their mind this month, you are not alone, and no, you did not break them.

October is dispersal season. In the wild, the babies born this spring are leaving their families right now to find their own territory before winter breeding season. That instinct does not switch off in a backyard enclosure. It shows up as pacing, digging, climbing, yelling at 2 AM, and testing every latch like it owes them money.

What helps:
Double check latches, locks, and dig guards now, not after the great escape
Add extra enrichment so all that restless energy has somewhere to go
Keep routines steady so home still feels like home

It settles down. In the meantime, may your fences be strong and your coffee be stronger.

A fox is not a dog.
We love these animals fiercely. That is exactly why we will be honest with you: foxes are not beginner pets and they are not for everyone. They need permits in many states, specialized vets, secure enclosures, and hours of enrichment every single day. They will scream at 3am, steal everything you own, and outsmart every latch you buy.
Exhibit A: this bed lasted about four hours. 😅
Responsible ownership means doing the homework BEFORE the animal comes home. Dreaming of a fox? Start with research, talk to breeders (hi, that is us 👋), and be honest about your lifestyle.
The animals deserve nothing less.

October crazies update 🥴

I am currently sleeping with AirPods in, playing my favorite TV shows directly into my ears, because the alternative is listening to foxes scream all night. Running on zero sleep. Zero.

For anyone new here, the October crazies are a real thing. As the days get shorter, red foxes switch into fall mode: restless, chaotic, extra destructive, and LOUD. Their bodies are gearing up for winter breeding season, and apparently their warmup routine is yelling at 2 AM.

So if I look haunted this month, a fox did this to me. And I would still pick them every time. 🦊

Those satellite-dish ears on a bat-eared fox are not just for looks. They can hear termites and beetle larvae moving underground. Basically the most adorable pest detection system in nature.
They are also one of the most social fox species, living in family groups and raising pups together. Cute AND great parents.

Everyone, meet Appa, our marble fox. And yes, he knows exactly how gorgeous that coat is.
Marble is one of the flashiest color morphs in the fox world. A color morph is just a variation in coat color, kind of like hair color in people, and it can turn an already beautiful animal into a living work of art.
Fun fact: no two marble coats are exactly alike. His pattern is one of one.
