For mild allergic dermatitis quiet often bathing with an antimicrobial shampoos are helpful and may avoid a trip to your veterinarian. Due to emerging concerns for antibiotic resistance, topical therapy is recommended for treatment of canine superficial pyoderma1; 2% to 4% chlorhexidine-containing products are often suggested as first-choice therapies.

Although wipes/pads, sprays, and mousses are available and effective for focal infections in areas with less hair, medicated shampoos are often the most effective products for patients with dense coats and/or diffuse infections. Patients should be bathed at least 2 to 3 times per week, with a recommended contact time of 10 to 15 minutes.1

It's allergy season!! And your dogs are scratching and licking. First of all, be sure that you maintain year round flea/tick control. Bravecto has an injectable that provides 12 months flea protection. Next my rule of thumb is if they are itchy, give them a bath. If there are no sores, use a non-detergent shampoo with oatmeal and omega fatty acids that can be soothing. Lather and leave on for 10 minutes and then rinse. By bathing you are washing away pollens attached to hair coat. If there are sores on their body, see your veterinarian.

There are many systemically acting flea control products. These are either absorbed through the skin or taken as a pill. They include products such as Bravecto, Comfortis, Nexguard, Revolution, Credelio. These medications are prescription medications. These medications act quickly as compared to OTC topicals. Most act within a few hours. They are effective when the flea ingests a blood meal. Because of the rapid action, most fleas do not have the opportunity to reproduce. Some are also labeled for treatment against heartworms and other intestinal parasites. Many are required to be adminstered monthly, others like Bravecto can be give every 2-3 months. Again, TALK TO YOUR VETERINARIAN. WHAT IS BEST FOR YOUR PET!

Now a bit about various flea control products. There is a plethora of OTC topical flea control products out there; Advantage, Frontline, Seresto. Spot-on's, sprays, collars and they have little to no systemic absorption. Some simply cover the skin and may be washed away with frequent bathing. Some are absorbed into the dermal layers of the skin and are not as easily influenced by bathing or for those dogs that are in the pond daily. These products once applied, move across the body and therefore need some time to ensure full coverage. Some studies suggest they are not evenly dispersed to distal sites such as extremities. Most of there products also have a slower kill rate, so if your pet has a huge infestation, they are not or treatment of choice. Most require monthly application every 3-4 weeks and may work well for your pet providing you are consistent with their application. Also how they are applied is important. Flea collars must be applied snuggly in order to come in contact with the skin. Topical spot-ons should be disturbed along the neck and back to aid in distribution of the product. TALK TO YOUR VETERINARIAN to determine which flea control will be best for your pet's lifestyle.

With increasing numbers of requests for on-line pharmacy prescription medications, we are forced to begin charging and administration fee for process these requests. On-line pharmacies do not track your pet's medications, they merely fill the prescription. It is this office's responsibility for making sure your pet gets the proper medication and follow ups that may be required for your pet. Properly logging your pet's medications into their records takes a great deal of time for our Dr. and staff. If you currently request medications from out-side on line pharmacies, such as Chewy, Amazon, PetMeds, etc., you will need to contact our receptionist regarding these administrative fees, before we can fulfill your request. We are sorry for this inconvenience.
