Hey everyone! With the holidays coming up and the colder weather on the way KP Horsemanship will be shutting down temporarily for the season.

This break will give me time to add a few more lesson horses to our program so we can hopefully offer even more opportunities in the new year. ๐ŸคŽ

I will still be offering mobile training sessions for those who have their own horse at home weather permitting, of course.

We hope to open back up after the New Year, once the weather warms and conditions are safe for both riders and horses.

Thank yโ€™all so much for understanding and for an amazing year. Stay warm, enjoy the holidays with your families, and I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Not my writing but I loved this so much I had to share

Last week, one of my students excitedly showed me her new cowboy boots. She was so proud of them, but then shared how kids at school had bullied her for wearing them with leggings. They called her โ€œfake,โ€ saying she wasnโ€™t โ€œcowboy enoughโ€ and wasnโ€™t a โ€œreal cowgirl.โ€

I told her she was more of a cowgirl than any of them because real cowgirls support each other, show kindness, and act with compassion.

Later that week, I had a lesson with a younger student. Her little legs barely reached past the saddle pad, and she had to work hard to give the horse the right cues. She never complained or asked to stop; she just kept trying. I gave her a high five and said, โ€œWell done, cowgirl!โ€ She responded, a bit sadly, โ€œIโ€™m not a real cowgirl; Iโ€™m just using your horse for lessons.โ€

I explained that itโ€™s not the horse, the hat, or the boots that make someone a cowgirlโ€”itโ€™s the dedication, grit, and determination. By that measure, she absolutely deserved the title.

Too often, people call themselves cowgirls (or cowboys) just because they have the lookโ€”the ranch, the boots, or the horse. But none of that truly defines them. A real cowgirl is someone who lifts others up, shows resilience, and stays committed, even when things get tough.

So, if you're willing to tear someone down, donโ€™t call yourself a cowgirl. Nobodyโ€™s horse is that high.

โœจ๐Ÿด Exciting News at the Barn! ๐Ÿดโœจ

Weโ€™re so happy to share that we have a new addition to our herd! This sweet girl came from a loving family who wanted nothing more than for her to continue being cherished and cared for. ๐Ÿ’•

She is a little older, and weโ€™ll be having our vet out soon to check her teeth and follow up on an old injury that has already healed. We want to make sure sheโ€™s feeling her absolute best as she settles in.

Freya has already claimed dibs on her new best friend, and we couldnโ€™t be more excited to welcome this beautiful soul into our barn family.

Welcome home, sweet girl!

Learned helplessness is something I see in horses more often than people realize. On the outside it can look like the perfect horse. Quiet. Calm. Doesnโ€™t spook. Doesnโ€™t argue. To most people that sounds like the goal. But to me it can be one of the saddest things to see.

A horse that has shut down is not a horse that feels safe or happy. It is a horse that has learned nothing it does will change the outcome. Somewhere along the way that horse was asked and asked again without ever being given the release it needed to understand. Maybe it was punished for trying. Maybe the pressure never stopped no matter what it did. Eventually that horse just gives up.

You can tell because they stop showing personality. They stop trying new things. They stop thinking. They move because they have to, not because they want to. That is not a willing partner, that is a horse that has learned to survive by staying quiet. And sometimes all that bottled up stress comes out in a big explosion when you least expect it.

That is why the way we train matters so much. Horses need clarity. They need to know there is an answer and that they are capable of finding it. When I work with a horse I use pressure in a way they can understand and the second they even try I give them a release. That release is everything. That is how they learn they can succeed.

I stay consistent so the rules never change on them. I give them time to think so they can figure it out instead of shutting down. I am patient with the little tries because those little tries are what build confidence. And I keep a balance of firmness and kindness. I do not want to bully a horse into submission, but I also cannot let a horse run over me.

My goal is never just a quiet horse. My goal is a horse that understands, that trusts, and that feels confident in itself. I want a horse that meets me at the gate ready to work and a horse that chooses to work with me, not one that has given up and does it out of fear or obligation.

Because every horse deserves more than survival. They deserve partnership.

๐ŸŒฟ Looking for a Lesson Horse ๐ŸŒฟ

KP Horsemanship is looking to add a dependable horse to our riding program. This horse would do about 3 hours of light work per week with beginner and intermediate riders. Nothing fancy, mostly walk/trot, with a little cantering if theyโ€™re comfortable.

Most importantly, Iโ€™m looking for a horse that enjoys children and people. My lessons focus more on horsemanship than just riding, so theyโ€™ll need to enjoy standing for grooming, love, and connection just as much as (if not more than) the riding itself.

โœ… Open to long-term lease, low rehoming fee, or a no-sale contract
โœ… Older horses welcome
โœ… Maintenance needs are absolutely fine, theyโ€™ll be fully supported

I do have a trusted broker Iโ€™ll be purchasing through soon, but before I begin shopping, Iโ€™d love to offer a safe, caring place to any horse that might need it. I can provide plenty of references from vets, farriers, chiropractors, past owners, and clients.
