🌅🐾 Evening Walks Are Great…But Watch for Wildlife!

Cooler temperatures and beautiful Colorado sunsets can make evening one of the best times to walk your dog. Unfortunately, you’re not the only one taking advantage of the cooler hours.

Around Fort Morgan and throughout northeastern Colorado, dusk and dawn are active times for wildlife, including coyotes, skunks, raccoons, deer, and other animals you may encounter along roads, trails, fields, and open spaces.

A few precautions can help keep those peaceful evening walks from becoming unexpectedly wild:

🦮 Keep dogs leashed. Even dogs with excellent recall may chase or approach wildlife before you can stop them.

🔦 Carry a flashlight. Scan ahead, especially near tall grass, brush, fields, ditches, and other areas where animals may be difficult to see.

↔️ Give wildlife plenty of space. Never allow your dog to approach, chase, or corner a wild animal.

🦨 Be especially cautious around skunks. Curious dogs and startled skunks are a combination nobody wants to bring home.

💉 Keep your pet’s rabies vaccination current. Wildlife can carry rabies, making vaccination an important layer of protection if an unexpected encounter occurs.

If you spot wildlife, calmly create distance and choose another route when possible. A little awareness can help keep evening adventures enjoyable for everyone—two-legged, four-legged, and wild. 🐾🌙

🐾❤️ Senior pets have a special way of leaving paw prints on our hearts.

Maybe the walks have gotten a little slower. Maybe there’s more grey around the muzzle, a few extra naps during the day, or a little more help needed getting into the car.

But somehow, the love just keeps getting bigger. ❤️

Senior pets have been there through ordinary days and big life moments. They know our routines, our voices, our favourite spots on the couch—and probably exactly where the treats are kept.

In honour of Senior Pet Month, we want to celebrate the dogs and cats who have spent years making life better simply by being part of it.

🐶🐱 Share a photo of your senior pet in the comments and tell us their age! We’d love to fill this post with some well-loved grey faces. 🥹❤️

And as our pets get older, regular veterinary care becomes even more important for catching changes early and helping them stay comfortable through their golden years.

🌾🐾 As harvest season gets underway, it's important to remember that the increased activity on farms can create new risks for pets.

Here are a few hazards to keep in mind:

🚜 Farm equipment: Large machinery has limited visibility and can be dangerous for curious pets.

🌽 Stored grain and silage: Grain bins, silage piles, and feed storage areas can pose serious risks. Pets can become trapped in loose grain, fall from unstable piles, or ingest moldy feed that may make them sick.

🌱 Recently treated fields: Some fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides may still be present after application. Always follow label directions and keep pets away until it's safe.

🐍 Wildlife encounters: Harvest often displaces rodents, snakes, and other wildlife that may wander into new areas.

🌾 Sharp debris: Corn stalks, stubble, broken branches, and other crop residue can cause cuts, puncture wounds, or paw injuries.

If you've ever driven past a pasture and seen a cow chewing long after it finished grazing, you might have wondered... what is it chewing?

The answer is cud—a small ball of partially digested grass or hay that the cow brings back up from its stomach to chew a second time.

Here's how it works:

🌱 Step 1: A cow quickly grazes and swallows grass with very little chewing.

🦠 Step 2: The food enters the rumen—the largest compartment of the stomach—where billions of beneficial microbes begin breaking it down.

😋 Step 3: Later, the cow regurgitates small portions of that partially digested food (the cud) and chews it thoroughly before swallowing it again.

💚 Step 4: This second round of chewing helps break down tough plant fibers so the nutrients can be fully digested and absorbed.

A clean ear doesn't just look better—it can help your pet feel better, too.

Healthy ears should be:
✨ Clean
👃 Free of strong odors
🌸 Light pink inside with very little wax

If you notice any of these signs, it's time to schedule an exam:
🔸 Frequent head shaking
🔸 Scratching at the ears
🔸 Redness or swelling
🔸 Brown, yellow, or black discharge
🔸 A strong or unpleasant odor

🐴 Things Your Horse Judges You For 👀

Let's be honest... your horse has opinions.

🐎 Being 3 minutes late with dinner.
🥕 Bringing the "wrong" treats.
🧥 Wearing a new hat they definitely don't trust.
📸 Asking them to pose for "just one more picture."
🚶 Walking past their stall without saying hello.
🪣 Showing up with a fly spray bottle.

The truth is, horses are incredibly observant. They recognize familiar people, notice changes in routines, and quickly pick up on body language and emotions. That's one of the reasons they form such strong bonds with the people they trust.
