Halloween candy can be more trick than treat for pets. 🎃 Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which can cause vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, or seizures. Sugar-free candy and gum may contain xylitol, which can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar and liver damage in dogs. Raisins can lead to kidney failure, and candy wrappers can cause choking or intestinal blockages.

Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and wrappers well out of reach, and remind kids not to share their treats with pets. If your pet gets into Halloween candy, contact your veterinarian right away.

According to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, 59% of dogs and 61% of cats in the U.S. were classified as overweight or obese in its 2022 survey—and 32% of owners of overweight or obese pets considered their pet to be a normal weight.
