Halloween is coming… Boo! 👻

We have some quick tips for keeping your pets safe and happy.

A few things to keep in mind:

• Candy, chocolate, and wrappers left on counters or in trick-or-treat bags can make pets sick or cause a blockage.

• Glow sticks, batteries, and string lights are easy to chew when the house is busy.

• Costumes that cover the face or restrict movement usually stress pets more than they entertain them.

• Open doors and extra people mean more chances for a quick escape — collars and tags are a good idea that night.

If something happens, just call us. We’re right here in Old Town, and we’d rather talk through “is this okay?” than see you later.

Meet Cassidy, our October Pet of the Month 💙⭐️

In her younger days, she was the ultimate barn dog. 🐴 She would hang out all day, go on trail rides, and has been to just about every dressage and three-day eventing venue in the Southeast. She’s not trained in the classical sense, but she is the very best-behaved dog.

She has the best doggie social skills, and Susan credits her with how well-behaved her kids, Hiccup and Max, became. 🐾 She recently welcomed two rescue bulldogs into their home and helped them adjust and feel secure.

These days, Cassidy is aging and facing a few health challenges. No matter how many things we’ve had to do for her, she still loves coming to see her friends at the clinic. 🏥 We’re glad we get to make time for her.

Got a gently used towel you can spare?

Fort Mill Animal Hospital is collecting towels to help keep our patients clean, cozy, and comfortable during their visits. A clean towel goes a long way on an exam table, after a bath, or when a pet just needs something soft.

Donated towels should be:
• Clean and in good condition
• Free from holes or tears
• Any color or size

Drop them off at the hospital during regular business hours. We’ll take it from there.

Pets remember how a visit felt.

That’s why our team has gone through Fear Free training.

Here’s the short version of what that training is. Fear Free is a set of skills for lowering stress in the lobby, the scale, and the exam room: slower handling, better use of treats and touch, reading body language, giving pets a minute when they need it, and changing the plan when a patient is overwhelmed.

We did the training, and use what we learned every day with our patients.

What that looks like here on Main Street: a calmer wait when we can manage it, treats and praise, handling that matches your pet, and curbside when that’s the best option.

Hey Fort Mill Pet Lovers! We have a new pet care guide for you. This one is about Diabetes in Dog & Cats. 🐶🐱

Drinking more. Peeing more. Losing weight even though they’re eating.

Those three changes are easy to blame on “getting older.” They’re also some of the most common early signs of diabetes in dogs and cats.

Dogs usually need insulin for life. Cats more often have an insulin-resistance type — and some can go into remission if we catch it early. Either way, you can’t diagnose it at home. It takes an exam, bloodwork, and a urine test.

Call us the same day if you also see vomiting, collapse, not eating, labored breathing, or sweet-smelling breath. That can be an emergency.
