Taylor has been a part of the Animal Clinic Team for a while now but we are so excited to introduce her here:

Taylor lives in Thornton, Colorado and recently graduated with a Veterinary Assistant certification from Community College of Denver. She enjoys staying home and cuddling with her two dogs, King and Tuddy. She is excited to be a part of the Animal Clinic Family!

✨Meet the Staff Monday✨

This week, we're excited to introduce one of our small animal veterinarians, Dr. Spangler!

Dr. Spangler joined Animal Clinic in June 2019 after earning her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine through the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Iowa State University joint program. Raised on a farm in rural southeast Nebraska, she loved growing up in the Cornhusker State, but Colorado's mountains and endless opportunities for adventure inspired her to make the move west after graduation.

As one of our small animal doctors, Dr. Spangler enjoys caring for dogs and cats and building lasting relationships with their families. Outside of work, she enjoys powerlifting, hiking, skiing, kayaking, traveling with her partner, Caleb, and catching the latest movie whenever she gets the chance. At home, they're kept entertained by their Australian Shepherd, Drake, and two cats, Mimosa and Winston.

Be sure to say hello to Dr. Spangler the next time you see her around the clinic!

🐄🥛Topic of the Week: Colostrum 🥛🐄

Colostrum is the first milk the cow produces after giving birth and it is chalk full of critical immunoglobulins for the baby. The placenta of a cow does not allow for the calf to receive any immune system from the mom during pregnancy so the only immune system it has in the first days of life is from colostrum alone. Because of how important colostrum is, it is critical that new babies drink enough shortly after birth. If you have a calf that seems to struggle with nursing or a mom who isn’t too interested in being a mother, let us know so we can help you make sure baby gets the best care possible!

We introduced you to one of our amazing doctors last week and now we are so excited to introduce you to one of our phenomenal veterinary assistants, Anna!

In 2023, Anna graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Wildlife Biology. Prior to working at the Animal Clinic, she worked as an Animal Care Specialist at a farm animal sanctuary. Anna joined the Animal Clinic as a Vet Assistant and fell right in with the rest of our amazing team! In her free time, Anna love skiing, paddle boarding, reading, cooking, and crafting.

Equine asthma is a breathing problem caused by inflammation in the airways. It can range from mild to severe, but across all forms, one thing matters most: reducing dust and irritants in the horse's environment.

What many owners think of as "dust" is more than just visible dirt. It can include bacteria, mold and fungal spores, mites, endotoxins, and other tiny particles that trigger inflammation in the lungs. Some of the worst particles are actually too small to see.

The key is the horse's breathing zone - the air right around the nose. Dust in that area matters much more than dust elsewhere in the barn. Even a stable that looks clean can still have harmful tiny particles in the air.

Common dust and irritant sources can include:
• Hay
• Bedding
• Sweeping or mucking stalls
• Barn blowers
• Round bale feeding
• Very dry, windy conditions
• Pollens or other allergens
• Unusual triggers like nearby manure piles, chemical sprays, chickens, or certain bedding materials

Management often focuses on lowering dust exposure:
• Reconsidering hay and bedding
• Using wood shavings
• Feeding a pelleted diet or hay cubes
• Soaking hay
• Steaming hay correctly
• Considering haylage
• Avoiding round bale feeding in horses prone to severe asthma

Note that medication may help control inflammation or open the airways, but there is no replacement to environmental management. Long-term improvement depends on reducing dust in the horse's environment, especially in the breathing zone.

✨Meet the Staff Monday✨

We are starting a new trend here at Animal Clinic where we introduce you to one of our amazing team members each week. We are starting things off strong with our newest DVM, Dr. Kelsey Clancy!

Dr. Clancy started with us in January. You may have seen her around on farm calls or at the clinic but we are so excited to officially introduce her here!

Dr. Clancy graduated in 2023 from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Scotland and relocated to Colorado, where her family now resides, to begin her career in veterinary medicine. While she enjoys working with all types of livestock, great and small, her primary professional focus is equine medicine. Outside of work, Dr. Clancy enjoys spending time with her husband, Sam, and their dogs and cat —Fiddler, Boomer, and Jasper. She loves being outdoors and can often be found hiking, camping, snowshoeing, or snowboarding. In her downtime, she also enjoys cooking, reading, crocheting, and knitting.

It’s with both gratitude and heavy hearts that we share Dr. Shasa is starting a new adventure, and her last day with Animal Clinic LLC will be Friday, May 8th. 🐾♥

She has meant so much to our team, our clients, and the pets she’s cared for, and we’re truly going to miss her every day. We’re so thankful for the compassion, dedication, and joy she’s given to us and to her clients, and we wish her nothing but the very best in this next chapter!

Dear Clients,
After five wonderful years, I wanted to share that my last day at the Animal Clinic will be Friday, May 8, 2026.

It’s hard to put into words what this journey has meant to me. Being a part of your pets’ lives, whether for happy puppy and kitten visits, routine check-ups, or some of the more difficult moments, has been one of the greatest honors of my career. Thank you for entrusting me to care for your beloved companions. That trust is something I have never taken lightly.

To my clients, thank you for your kindness, your stories, and for allowing me to build relationships not just with your pets, but with you as well. So many of you have left a lasting impression on my heart.

To my colleagues and our incredible staff, I am endlessly grateful. This team is truly something special. They are compassionate, dedicated, and deeply committed to the animals and families we serve. It has been a privilege to work alongside such talented and caring individuals.

While I’m moving on to a new opportunity, this place and the people in it will always mean so much to me. I leave knowing you and your pets are in exceptional hands.

February is National Equine Dental month!
We will be offering a discount on equine dental floats. This year the dental special will run from January 19th-February 28th, 2026.

EQUINE DENTAL HEALTH:
Horses with dental problems may or may not show obvious signs of pain, irritation or discomfort. This is because some horses simply adapt to their discomfort. For this reason, periodic dental examinations performed by your equine veterinarian are essential to your horse’s health. It is important to catch dental problems early and address them before they become severe.
The following are indicators of dental problems from the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) to know when to seek veterinary attention for your horse:
1. Loss of feed from mouth while eating, difficulty with chewing, or excessive salivation.
2. Loss of body condition.
3. Large or undigested feed particles (long stems or whole grain) in manure.
4. Head tilting or tossing, bit chewing, tongue lolling, fighting the bit, or resisting bridling.
5. Poor performance, such as lugging on the bridle, failing to turn or stop, even bucking.
6. Foul odor from mouth or nostrils, or traces of blood from the mouth.
7. Nasal discharge or swelling of the face, jaw or mouth tissues.
