Secret Dog Tips

Nobody does these on purpose. But if your dog’s reactivity is getting worse instead of better, check yourself for these three:
1. Tightening the leash when you see a dog. Your dog feels that tension instantly and reads it as: “My human sees danger too.” You’ve confirmed the threat before they even reacted. Instead: keep the leash loose and change direction early, calmly.
2. Saying “it’s okay, it’s okay” in a worried voice. The words don’t matter — the tone does. A nervous tone signals nervous situation. If you talk, keep it genuinely upbeat and casual, like nothing’s happening. If you can’t fake calm, stay quiet and just act.
3. Punishing the growl or bark. The growl is your dog’s early warning system. Punish it enough and you get a dog that skips the warning and goes straight to the lunge — which is far more dangerous. Reward quiet noticing instead, and manage distance so they don’t need to warn.
The common thread: your dog is reading YOU constantly on walks. Your leash hand, your breathing, your voice. Getting your own signals under control is half the work — and it costs nothing to start today.
