If you know me for a long time then you know my first true puppy love was my Pitbull Savanna. I learned so much about love + responsibility. It was one of the hardest goodbyes I ever experienced. They are great dogs and they get a bad rap because people are not educated correctly on the breed and how to be responsible pitty owners. I’ve gotten 2 phone calls this week about Prey Drive behavior. This behavior often is not displayed until maturity and takes people by surprise so I want to put this out there.. please share with anyone you think would benefit from this. Breaks my heart seeing so many dumped and up for adoption because people had no idea what they were getting into! So understand this,
Pit bulls aren’t bad dogs, but genetics matter. They have a naturally high prey drive, and fast movement, excitement, or small animals can trigger that instinct, even in familiar situations. It’s not about being good or bad dog, it’s about understanding what they were bred for and respecting those traits. People often say it’s all in how pit bulls are raised, but that’s not necessarily true. That prey drive can exist regardless. Training, structure, and proper management are key, especially in high energy situations where things can escalate quickly! This is not a dog you’re going to have success with if you don’t set rules + boundaries you will be setting the dog up for failure in the future..
