šŸ¾ $5 Friday šŸ± Preparing for the Unexpected šŸ¾

This week has been another reminder that in rescue, we need to be ready for the things we didnā€™t plan for.

The kittens discovered during a TNR project. The injured cat who shows up at our door. The special food for a kitty whose injured mouth makes eating painful. The unexpected and then another trip to the vet.

We canā€™t always know whatā€™s coming next, but with your help, we can be better prepared to respond with care. ā¤ļø

šŸ¾ A happy update on our sweet Barry! šŸ§”

Thank you for all your concern and encouragement, and a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Robyn and the whole crew at Riverview Veterinary Center for taking such good care of him! To make sure Barryā€™s bloodwork looked good, we waited and our appointment ran right into their lunch hour, but they were so gracious and never made us feel like a burden. Weā€™re truly grateful for their kindness.

Barry has ulcers around his mouth, on his lips, and on his tongue that have made eating very painful. The cause isnā€™t certainā€”it could be something caustic he came into contact with or a viral infection. He received injections to help with pain and inflammation, along with an antibiotic to help prevent secondary bacterial infections.

The wonderful news: Barry tested negative for both FeLV and FIV, and Dr. Robyn is confident he will heal! ā¤ļø

For now, heā€™s settled into our bathroom while he recovers, although he would definitely prefer more roomā€”and more time being cuddled! Once his mouth has healed and heā€™s eating normally on his own, heā€™ll be ready for a loving forever home.

At approximately 2Ā½ years old, Barry has so much love to give. He adores people, loves being held and cuddled, and has been happy to befriend every friendly cat heā€™s met. Heā€™s a sensitive boy who gets frightened when other cats are mean to him, and dogs really scare him, so a dog-free home with gentle companions would be his perfect fit.

Barry is en route to the vet! šŸ¾ā¤ļø Weā€™ll soon know more about whatā€™s happening with his mouth and how we can help him feel better.

He gave us a little adventure before leaving! We had him in his kennel early while we gathered everything, but by the time we were ready to go, he had managed to escape. Thankfully, he didnā€™t go far! Heā€™s back in his kennel, with Gorilla Tape reinforcing the closure this time.

Thank you to the wonderful, compassionate team at Riverview Veterinary Center for always working with us to help these Kitties right away. Please keep our sweet boy in your thoughts and prayers.

Please keep this sweet guy in your thoughts and prayers. Heā€™s one of the friendly outdoor cats from our colony, and something is wrong with his mouth thatā€™s keeping him from eating.

Heā€™s now settled in as a guest in our bathroom, safe and warm while he waits for veterinary care tomorrow. Tonight, weā€™re grateful heā€™s letting us help him. šŸ¾

šŸ§” A new beginning for Pancake šŸ§”

Pancake was adopted tonight, and her story is one of love from both families.

Her family reached out to Safe Haven Cat Rescue for help after their son developed severe allergies and asthma. Pancake was a deeply loved member of their family, and finding her a new home was a heartbreaking decision.

After phone conversations and time spent meeting and getting to know one another, both families agreed this was a wonderful fit. Tonight, Pancake is on her way to a home where she will continue to be loved and cherished.

These moments hold both joy and sadness. A new family is welcoming Pancake with open hearts, while another is saying a difficult goodbye, grateful to know she will be cared for.

And Pancake gave us a sweet little moment of her own. While her new family did some shopping to prepare for her homecoming, they left her carrier open in the kitty meeting room. I was busy doing rescue work around the kennels when I glanced over and didnā€™t see her. Looking again, I realized she had tucked herself into her carrier, as if to say, ā€œIā€™m ready!ā€ šŸ§”

Thank you to both families for putting Pancakeā€™s well-being first, and to PetSmart for providing a safe, welcoming place for these meaningful connections.

Pancake has been a very loved member of her family. Sadly, a family member has developed a severe allergic reaction to cats, leaving them with the heartbreaking decision to find her a new home.
