Paws 'n Claws Veterinary Clinic is hiring!

We have an opening for a full-time veterinary technician. We are a small animal clinic in north Fort Collins seeking a qualified individual for a veterinary assistant/technician position. 1 year of animal experience preferred, but we are willing to train the right person with related experience. Full time, Monday through Friday with some alternating Saturday shifts.

We are looking for someone who possesses the following qualities:

- Compassionate and caring manner with clients and pets

- Good phone skills

- Professional attitude and appearance

- Attention to detail is a must

- Ability to correctly enter and maintain medical records

- Competent in all aspects of small animal surgery, dental evaluation and cleaning, in-house laboratory work (bloodwork, f***l analysis, urinalysis, etc.), patient care, radiology (general and dental), IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, etc.

- Must be able to communicate with clients in exam rooms, over the phone, and provide excellent customer service

- Need to understand the importance of each client and patient to our business and treat both with the highest level of care, competence, warmth, and professionalism

August is National Dog Month!!!!!

During the month of August, National Dog Month celebrates our loveable canine pals smack in the middle of the dog days of summer. Whether your dog burrows under the blankets with you at night, plays in the sprinkler, or alerts you to a health need, we know they are constantly improving our lives and making them more fun.

Dogs are the #1 most commonly owned pets on the planet, and with good reason. Studies prove our canine companions make us happier, less stressed, and more optimistic. The list of benefits to spending time with a dog goes on and on.

The companionship and affection we share with them make their lives better, too. Dog lovers know a life without dogs is a life missing something special, and that’s a fact worth celebrating!

How can you celebrate National Dog Month? This is the easy part. Celebrate with your best pals. Take an extra-long walk. Play fetch or spare an extra treat. Get your dog the toy he/she has been wanting or visit the dog park. Donate to your local shelter or to a larger dog non-profit. Not only will the dogs appreciate the support, but so will their future human companions.

Did you know that Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is one of the most common infectious diseases in cats?

It is a contagious retrovirus that weakens a cat’s immune system, making it very hard for them to fight off everyday infections.

How it spreads:
- Close contact like mutual grooming
- Sharing food and water bowls
- Bite wounds from infected cats
- Mother to kittens

*Note: FeLV is strictly a cat virus and cannot be passed to humans or dogs!

Signs to watch for:
- Weight loss
- Loss of appetite
- Low energy or lethargy
- Frequent or recurring infections
- Pale gums or poor coat condition

How to keep cats safe:
- Regular testing
- Keeping cats safely indoors
- Staying up to date on the FeLV vaccine for indoor/outdoor cats

If your cat is indoor/outdoor, call us if you have questions about their testing or vaccine status.

Kennel Cough Awareness

Just like kids can pick up colds at school, dogs that spend time around other dogs can sometimes be exposed to kennel cough.

Kennel cough is a common respiratory illness that spreads easily in social settings such as daycare, boarding, grooming, dog parks, and training classes.

Signs to watch for include:
- Persistent dry or honking cough
- Sneezing or nasal discharge
- Mild lethargy
- Decreased appetite

Most cases are mild and self-limiting, especially in dogs that have been vaccinated against kennel cough. In some cases, if dogs are continuing to worsen, develop a fever, and just don't seem to be getting any better on their own, medical intervention can help them feel better faster.

If your dog goes to daycare, boarding, grooming, dog parks, or training classes, and develops any of the symptoms mentioned above, please keep them home and contact us for guidance.

Keeping sick dogs away from group play helps protect all of our four-legged friends and allows your dog time to rest and recover.

Fourth of July celebrations are approaching!

We will be closed Friday, July 3th through Sunday, July 5th. We will reopen on Monday, July 6th.

This time of year can be scary and anxiety inducing for some pets.

Some things to consider if your pet is startled by fireworks and other loud noises:

- Keep pets inside in a quiet, dark room with a TV or radio on to muffle loud outside noises.

- Verify and update ID tags and microchip information in case your pet gets out. Take some time to ensure yards and enclosures are secure.

- Consider contacting us about anxiety medications well in advance of the upcoming holiday.

- With parties and other festivities coming up, ensure your pets do not get into alcohol, THC products, chocolates, bones, etc. If this should happen, have your pet seen at an urgent care facility.
