Fourth of July celebrations are approaching!

We will be closed Friday, July 3th through Sunday, July 5th. We will reopen on Monday, July 6th.

This time of year can be scary and anxiety inducing for some pets.

Some things to consider if your pet is startled by fireworks and other loud noises:

- Keep pets inside in a quiet, dark room with a TV or radio on to muffle loud outside noises.

- Verify and update ID tags and microchip information in case your pet gets out. Take some time to ensure yards and enclosures are secure.

- Consider contacting us about anxiety medications well in advance of the upcoming holiday.

- With parties and other festivities coming up, ensure your pets do not get into alcohol, THC products, chocolates, bones, etc. If this should happen, have your pet seen at an urgent care facility.

Wishing everyone a happy and safe Fourth of July from Paws 'n Claws Veterinary Clinic!

Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria. These bacteria can be found worldwide in soil and water. There are many strains of Leptospira bacteria that can cause disease, and many mammals are susceptible—including dogs, people, livestock, and certain wildlife. Although cats also may become ill, this happens only rarely.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:
• Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
• Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
• Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
• Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

Leptospirosis is most often spread through the urine of an infected animal, especially (but not only) wild rodents. Infected dogs can seem healthy but still pass Leptospira bacteria in their urine. The bacteria can survive for weeks to months in urine-soaked soil. Dogs typically become infected when their mucous membranes (as in the mouth, nose, or eyes) or skin wounds (like cuts or scrapes) are exposed to urine or urine-contaminated water or soil. Infection can also be spread through urine-contaminated food or bedding, or the tissues or carcasses of infected animals.

Fortunately, vaccines are available to protect dogs from this potentially life-threatening disease. Because of the risk and severity of leptospirosis, experts recommend that all dogs be vaccinated.

Today is International Chihuahua Appreciation Day!

This day celebrates the smallest breed of dog in the world. Genetic studies indicate that the Chihuahua retains a small proportion of pre-Columbian indigenous American dog ancestry, distinguishing it from most modern breeds, which are largely of European origin.

Bold and Fearless:
Despite their small size, Chihuahuas are known for their boldness. They often display a confident demeanor and can be quite protective of their owners.

Affectionate and Loyal:
Chihuahuas tend to form strong bonds with their owners, often showing loyalty and affection. They thrive on attention and can be very loving companions.

Playful and Energetic:
These dogs enjoy interactive play and can be quite spirited. They often engage in playful antics and enjoy games that stimulate their minds.

Sensitive and Anxious:
Chihuahuas can be sensitive to their environment and may experience anxiety, especially if not properly socialized. They may also develop separation anxiety if overly attached to their owners.
