It is hot here this week and we have been seeing all the heat-related illnesses.

Did you know that heat stroke is a kind of environmental trauma? And just like any trauma, a prepared team can lead to the best outcome.

1. Turn on AC in the treatment area.

2. Set up for an IV.

3. Find towels! The floor and crash table often get wet during active cooling.

4. Prepare for active cooling (e.g., clear a crash table near a sink, find clippers, cool an IV fluid bag, gather ice packs).

For more practical tips on heat-related illness and other environmental traumas, check out Module 10 in the VetATLS Online Program!

You know the feeling. A trauma case is called as a "STAT". And you freeze. Then your team hesitates too.

One that happened to me recently was a 6-week puppy with dog bite wounds to the head. I wasn't sure whether the puppy had a TBI or was in pain or just was panicking.

The VetATLS program is designed just for those moments when you need the competence and confidence to evaluate and treat any trauma case that comes through the door.

The open access ACVECC Veterinary Committee on Trauma Registry Report 2022–2023 report is out in JVECC! The paper by Wedig et al. features innovative graphics combining number of cases and fatality by trauma type, giving a totally new look to the demographics of trauma.

Here is a sneak peek at the data in dogs! The inner circle represents trauma type, and outer sections represent trauma subtype. Fatality rate is depicted as a color scale from dark purple (0% fatality) to bright yellow (25%) fatality.
