Sometimes the most productive thing we can give a dog isn’t another instruction.
It’s enough time to discover they already know what to do.
Good training requires direction.
We teach. Guide. Interrupt. Redirect. Show the dog what works when their instincts, habits, or emotions would take them somewhere that isn’t in their best interest.
But eventually, another skill has to develop:
The ability to figure something out without us immediately stepping in.
And sometimes we’re the ones who make that difficult.
The dog hesitates, so we coax.
They look uncertain, so we reassure.
They pause, so we repeat the command.
They encounter difficulty, so we make it easier.
They look at us, and we immediately provide the answer.
All with good intentions of course!
But when help arrives before the dog has had a chance to think, we may accidentally interrupt the very process we’re trying to build.
Because there’s a difference between a dog who needs information and a dog who needs a moment to access information they already have.
That pause matters.
It’s where a dog can move from:
What do I do?
to:
Wait. I know this.
That’s problem-solving. That’s confidence. That’s independence beginning to emerge.
This doesn’t mean withholding direction from a dog who’s genuinely overwhelmed, confused, or incapable of navigating the situation successfully.
Support still matters.
But support doesn’t always mean making the answer immediate.
Sometimes it means staying present without rescuing.
Giving the dog enough space to think, make a choice, recover from a little uncertainty, and discover their own competence.
Because confidence isn’t only built by succeeding with our help.
Some of it is built in the moment a dog realizes:
I did that.
There will be times when leadership means stepping in quickly.
And there will be times when good leadership means recognizing that we’ve already taught enough—and getting out of the way long enough for the dog to use it.
Don’t rush to fill every pause.
Sometimes the pause is where the learning is happening.
