✨Let’s talk about shaving double coated breeds!✨
Will I do it? - yes
Do I recommend it? - not always..
Does it damage their coat? - sometimes 🤷🏼♀️
Shaving a double coated dog can be a gamble, but there are things we can do to minimize the risk of your dog’s coat not growing back in properly.
Your dogs age and health play a big role here. Older dogs and dogs with weaker immune systems or thyroid issues can have a harder time growing hair in general, just like people. So when you cut it all off, those underlying issues are exposed through the lack of regrowth. It’s not necessarily “caused” by shaving, but is more so revealed.
Pomeranians are prone to clipper alopecia. Shaving closely can disrupt the hair follicles growth cycle, putting it in a permanent “resting” phase and causing the hair to not grow back. Sometimes in spots, sometimes all over. Cutting their hair at a longer length can prevent damage to the follicle.
“But we shaved him once and he grew back just fine.”
Yup that’s typical actually, most dogs see signs of an issue after repeated shave downs. So just because you shaved them once or twice, does not mean you will never have an issue in the future.
“Will it grow back?”
Possibly. Proper grooming, exfoliating, stimulating the hair follicles and leaving their hair at a longer length may help reset their natural growth cycle, but not always. A visit with your vet can also help rule out any underlying health issues that would prevent regrowth.
If you’d like your double coated dog shaved down, I will always go over these side effects and make sure you’re aware of what can happen if you do. I don’t usually recommend it, but there are certain cases like older dogs who can’t tolerate lots of hair or frequent brushings, skin infections or medical issues that would benefit from having excess hair cleared away, or matted impacted fur. Every dog is different!
With Shears To You your dog is getting more than a haircut, they’re getting the experience and expertise that will help guide you in making the best decisions suited to your individual dog’s needs and setting them up for a long healthy happy life! 🐶🩵
