Hey Real Dogs Real Days fans — week two of Understanding Your Dog, and we're moving up the pyramid.
Last week we established the foundation — every dog is a dog first. This week we're looking at the Group tier. Bred purpose. The job that was selected for before breed was ever a consideration.
Nine groups. Each one shaped by a different working purpose. Natural Dog, Sight Hound, Guardian, Toy, Scent Hound, Gun Dog, Terrier, Bulldog, Herding Dog. Same species. Very different jobs.
This is where you start to see why your dog does what they do — before you ever get to breed. The Group tier is the context that makes breed make sense.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days fans — midweek check in for the Dog tier.
Three dogs. Three moments. All of it dog.
A dachshund and his cache. An Aussie reading the landscape. A mixed breed wading through a world of information. No training happening in any of these photos — just the Dog tier running exactly as it should.
Predatory motor pattern, sensory awareness, environmental exploration. These aren't behaviours we teach. They're behaviours we start with.
That's the foundation. Everything else gets built on top of it.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days fans — June is all about understanding your dog. Not just the breed, not just the individual in front of you, but the whole picture.
This month we're working through four tiers: Dog → Group → Breed → Individual. Each one tells you something. Together they tell you a lot.
We start at the foundation. Before breed. Before name. Before history. Every dog is a dog first — a domesticated social predator with a highly developed sensory system. Social, sensory-driven, and wired with predatory motor patterns. These aren't quirks. They're dog.

Rainy day? Good. That's still a training day.
You don't need perfect conditions to build off leash freedom skills. You need consistent, low-stakes opportunities to play games that build the skills your dog needs for the situations that matter.
Inside, in the yard, on the porch — wherever you are today is close enough. Engagement, recalls, proximity, attention. All of it counts. All of it adds up.
Real dogs. Real days. Good enough is great.

Hey Real Dogs Real Days Fans --- Here is your next off leash prompt.
Start your walk together on leash or on a long line. When you find a good spot, stop and give your dog a calm release to go explore — then stand still and let them work out the space around you.
What they are doing in those moments is more than sniffing around. They are learning where you are, how far they can roam, and what it feels like to move back toward you. You become their anchor point, and that is a powerful thing.
When they reach the edge of a comfortable range, call them back. Reward that recall well and send them out again. Practice this a few times before you wrap up.
When you are ready to head out, leash up with a treat and some enthusiasm. Coming back to you and getting leashed up should always feel like a good deal to your dog.
Then finish your walk together on leash.
On leash, off leash, on leash again — all one conversation between you and your dog, all of it building the same thing. A dog who finds you worth coming back to, even when they don't have to.

Your movement is information. When your dog catches up to you, good things happen. They start to think about where you are — and whether they should close that gap.
That's off leash freedom. Not a dog who has to stay close. A dog who chooses to.
Start low distraction. Build from there as they're ready.
Training for fun. Skills for life.

Check Me Out Circle | Off Leash Games

Walking a circle sounds simple. And it is. But what your dog is learning inside that circle is everything.

When they check in and something good happens — then you keep moving and they get to go sniff — they start to figure out that being near you is worth it. That leaving is okay. That coming back restarts the fun.

That's proximity on their terms. And that's what off leash freedom is actually built on.

They're also learning to watch you. Because you're changing directions, you're unpredictable — and an unpredictable handler is an interesting one. A dog who finds you interesting is a dog who stays in your orbit even when they don't have to.

No recall cues. No pressure. Just a game that makes checking in feel like their best option.

That's the foundation. One circle at a time.

The transition from car to off leash is one of those moments most people skip right past — and it's worth paying attention to.
A little structure before the freedom makes the whole experience better for both of you. Lower arousal, stronger connection, and a dog that actually wants to explore with you instead of without you.

Its spring and the best time to prepare our dogs for off leash summer fun!
Before you take your dog somewhere off leash where you can't control the environment — do you know if they're ready for that responsibility?
Test their skills somewhere familiar. Enclosed. Low stakes.
Do they wait to be released after crossing a threshold? Are they interested in what you're doing? If you hide, do they come find you? If you engage with them, do they engage back? Can you call them away from an exciting distraction? Will they come when it's time to leave?
These are the building blocks of a dog who can handle being off leash in the real world.
Mostly yes — great. Not yet — work on the skill that's lacking.
Now you know. Before it really matters.

"Just make it exist first. You can make it good later."

Start somewhere. Start messy. Start with whatever you've got. We get so caught up in doing it right that we never get started. Stop waiting until conditions are perfect — the behavior isn't going to build itself. Good comes later. But only if you start.
