Welcome home, rescue pup! October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: a perfect time to celebrate the dogs who bring love, loyalty, and second chances to our families. 🐾

If you’ve recently adopted, schedule a wellness exam within your dog’s first week home. Our team can review their records, check for common health concerns, discuss vaccines and parasite prevention, and help you build a healthy routine.

During those first few days, provide a quiet safe space, keep meals and walks consistent, introduce family members gradually, and give your new companion time to settle in. Patience and kindness go a long way!

We’re proud to provide personalized, affordable care for Forest Park families. Call us for current wellness exam pricing and appointment availability.

Bad breath isn’t just stinky: it can be a sign of dental disease. 🐾

Tartar buildup and gum disease can cause discomfort and make it difficult for your pet to eat. If left untreated, dental problems may also affect overall health. Watch for signs such as tartar, red or swollen gums, trouble chewing, dropping food, pawing at the mouth, or changes in eating habits.

Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings help remove buildup, support healthy gums, and keep your pet comfortable. Our team provides caring dental evaluations and cleaning services tailored to your pet’s needs.

If your pet’s breath has become unusually strong or you’ve noticed changes in their mouth or eating, give us a call. We’re here to help your best friend enjoy a healthier smile!

Free vaccines are great. Your pet still deserves a veterinarian.

We support community and county vaccine clinics. Protecting pets is good for everyone. Just remember, a vaccine is one part of preventive healthcare. A wellness exam looks at the whole pet: a full physical examination, teeth and mouth, ears and skin, heart and lungs, joints and mobility, parasite risks, nutrition, behavior, and lifestyle. We’ll provide individualized vaccine recommendations and a practical preventive-care plan, along with complete wellness evaluation, diagnostics, dental care, treatment, and ongoing medical support. Bring your vaccine records and call us for a no-judgment visit tailored to your pet.

Some small businesses become part of the background in the best way. They open the doors, learn your name, recognize familiar faces, and keep showing up year after year.

That kind of steady, everyday presence means a lot in a community. Veterinary Medical Center of Clayton has been part of Forest Park since 1952, and we’re grateful to be one small part of the neighborhood’s story.

Is your pet in pain? They may not make it obvious. 🐾

Cats and dogs often hide discomfort, so watch for subtle changes such as limping, reduced appetite, hiding, changes in behavior, or excessive grooming. Even small differences can be worth discussing with your veterinarian.

During Animal Pain Awareness Month, schedule a wellness exam so our team can help identify concerns early and create a comfortable care plan. We also offer cold laser therapy: a drug-free pain management option that may help support healing and comfort for appropriate pets.

Traveling internationally with your pet? Complex destinations require careful timing: especially for microchips, rabies vaccines, testing, and paperwork.

Use this checklist:
1. Confirm destination and airline requirements.
2. If required, implant and record the microchip before the rabies vaccine.
3. Schedule rabies vaccination per the destination’s timeline.
4. Complete a required rabies titer; allow time for lab processing and waiting periods.
5. Obtain an import permit, if required.
6. Schedule the health exam and certificate within the required window: often 10 days before arrival, but rules vary.
7. Allow time for USDA endorsement; incomplete paperwork can cause delays.

Bring your itinerary, destination/airline details, vaccine records, microchip information, titer results, import permit, and prior health certificates. With 25 years of experience and proper training, our team provides accurate guidance through every step at affordable, manageable costs, so you know exactly what comes next.

Start early: some destinations require weeks or months of planning. Call 404-366-4370 or visit 4798 Jonesboro Rd, Forest Park, GA 30297. Learn more at www.veterinarymedicalcenterofclayton.com.

“But the doctor said I could get whatever refill I want.”

If you work at a veterinary front desk, you've probably heard some version of this.

And usually the CSR isn't trying to make getting medication difficult.

There's a veterinarian behind that refill.

Prescription medications require veterinary authorization and an appropriate veterinarian-client-patient relationship. (usually 12 months)

Depending on your state's rules and the patient's medical history, that can mean your pet needs to be examined again before the veterinarian can legally or appropriately authorize another prescription. U.S. Food and Drug Administration is very clear on this.

Heartworm prevention is another one we explain constantly.

It isn't just:

“Fluffy has taken Heartgard before. Can I pick up another year?”

Heartworm preventives are prescription medications. And for dogs, annual heartworm testing is recommended even when prevention has been given consistently. The test uses a blood sample, because a dog can be infected without looking sick—and preventive medications aren't 100% effective.

The American Heartworm Society makes it pretty easy to remember:
Think 12.
12 months of prevention.
1 year =12 months.

So when the receptionist says:

“It looks like we're due for an exam.”

or

“We need an updated heartworm test before we can dispense that.”

They're not inventing hoops for you to jump through.
They're communicating the medical, regulatory, and hospital requirements the veterinarian has to work within.

And no—

“The doctor said it was fine last year” isn't quite the same thing as the doctor authorizing it today 5 minutes before close.
