🔥 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK | HORSE BARN SAFETY 🐴
A barn fire is every horse owner’s nightmare—and there are many things we can do to reduce the risk and be better prepared if an emergency happens.
Because barns often contain hay, bedding, wood, electrical equipment, fuel, and other combustible materials, fire prevention needs to be an everyday part of barn management.
Here are a few important ways to protect your horses and your barn:
🐴 Inspect electrical systems regularly. Watch for damaged cords, overloaded outlets, faulty fixtures, and signs of overheating. Have electrical work completed by a qualified professional.
🔥 Store hay and bedding safely. Keep hay dry and properly ventilated, and monitor newly stored hay for excessive heat. Never store combustible materials near heat sources.
🧯 Keep fire extinguishers accessible. Make sure they are appropriate for the types of fires that could occur and that everyone knows where they are and how to use them.
🚜 Maintain equipment. Regularly inspect tractors, heaters, extension cords, fans, and other equipment for damage, leaks, or electrical problems. Do not run space heaters, etc. overnight when the barn is not occupied!
🧹 Keep the barn clean and organized. Remove cobwebs, dust, debris, and unnecessary combustible materials. Keep aisles and exits clear. We tend to think that hay and bedding are a main source of barn fire fuel, but cobwebs are the most flammable thing in a barn.
🚭 Establish a no-smoking policy. Smoking materials should never be used or discarded near barns, hay, bedding, or other combustible materials.
🌳 Create defensible space. Keep weeds, brush, leaves, and other flammable vegetation away from buildings and make sure emergency vehicles can easily access the barn.
📋 Have an emergency plan. Everyone who works or spends time at the barn should know the emergency procedures, where the horses are kept, where exits are located, and who to contact.
Most importantly, don't wait for an emergency to think about fire safety. Walk through your barn with fresh eyes and ask yourself:
“If there were a fire here tonight, what would make it worse—and what can I change today?”
Our horses depend on us to create an environment that is not only healthy and comfortable, but safe.
🔥 Prevention today can make all the difference tomorrow.
