Full transparency: owning any pet is hard. Buttercup started having a runny nose, a squinty eye, and then on Saturday she had large wet spot underneath her chin. She was still eating fine, pooping, and being her usual self, but of course prey animals don’t show anything being wrong until late. They will hide illnesses and the same goes for guinea pigs. The vet suspected an ear infection, a URI and/or dental issues which unfortunately is all very common for lop buns. At the vet, they preformed a teeth trim under mild anesthesia along with flushing her tear ducts. She does have an ear infection and possible URI. During the teeth trim they noticed the left side inside her mouth has unusually thick skin, like scaring but are unsure of what that it’s from. There were only a couple of teeth that needed to be trimmed, but there were no obvious signs of impact teeth or tooth abscess. For the next couple of weeks, Buttercup will be on pain and inflammation meds. At that point, they will decide if she needs a CT to find the root cause. Her medical bill from today was $680 and the estimate for the CT is almost $2,000. Owning pets is not cheap. They need vet care.

Buttercup is at home and feeling better. Hopefully we see an improvement soon!
