We at All Creatures hope that you enjoy Labor Day! During the festivities, keep an eye out and be proactive to keep your pets safe.
BBQ & Picnic Food Hazards
Refrain from sharing your food with your pet. Onions, garlic, and chives cause anemia. Grapes and raisins cause kidney failure. Greasy, fatty meats cause pancreatitis. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, and anything containing xylitol is toxic. Bones seem like a nice treat for your pet but can lead to choking, foreign bodies, or splintering, causing internal injuries. Do not share drinks either. Do not pour them onto the floor and clean spills quickly as even small amounts of alcohol are toxic and potentially deadly.
Keep pets away while using bug spray, sunscreen and pesticides until entirely dry. Research products to ensure pet safety. Keep any insect coils and citronella products out of reach.
Lighter fluid is highly toxic, hot matches, charcoal, and open flames pose a risk of burns.
Heatstroke and dehydration
Symptoms to look out for are excessive panting or drooling, lethargy or weakness, vomiting or diarrhea, collapse or unresponsiveness. Prevention includes providing fresh water and shade at all times, never leaving pets in a parked car, even with the windows cracked, and limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
Water safety
If your pet can't stay out of the water, make sure to have supervision at all times. Use a pet life jacket and rinse off chlorine or lake water afterwards. Do not let your pet drink pool, pond, or lake water.
Trash and leftover dangers
Things like skewers, corn cobs, and spoiled food pose choking and poisoning hazards, and can lead to foreign bodies. Dispose of trash and food scraps promptly in a sealed container and keep out of reach.
We are here 24 hours throughout the weekend and on Monday in case you have an emergency with your pet.
