Looking for puppy activities and exercise tips to keep your puppy out of trouble and beat boredom? 7 ideas, games, and activities you can do with your pup starting today.

But wait... did you know that unwanted behaviors like biting, barking and jumping can all stem from a lack of proper exercise?

Did you also know that mental exercise is just as effective, if not more effective, than physical exercise when it comes to draining out your pup's energy?

Physical exercise can over-excite a dog and keep adrenaline pumping through your dog's body for a long period of time.

This is why your dog may seem more energetic when they come home from a walk.

Puppy Activities and Exercise Tips

Puppy Entertainment

Activity #1: Decompression walks, also known as Sniffaris, not neighborhood walks

You know that most puppies are not ready for neighborhood walks just yet? Neighborhood walks can be very overwhelming for puppies.

Golden Retrievers are lovely pets known for their double coat, which looks great but also requires regular grooming.

Are you Interested in knowing how to groom your golden retriever to keep its fur soft and clean?

All you need to do is follow the golden retriever grooming tips mentioned in the step-by-step guide below. Regular coat brushing, bathing, drying, trimming, ear cleaning, and dental care are important parts of your Golden Retriever grooming process.

Avoid shaving your golden retrievers, as their double coat is their ultimate shield against the weather, sun, and temperature changes. Make sure to follow a proper Golden Retriever grooming schedule to keep your pet looking clean.

Golden Retriever Grooming Tips

Why Golden Retriever Grooming Is Important?

Golden retriever grooming is important to keep the coat soft, clean, and tangle-free. You can reduce shedding around the home by regularly brushing during shedding seasons.

You bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, and for a moment, everything feels perfect. You see the floppy ears bounce with every step. You see a wagging tail following you everywhere, and those big brown eyes are just too cute. Then comes the tough part. That tiny, adorable puppy has no idea where the bathroom is. You must take this upon yourself to potty train your Golden Retriever.

Many new owners underestimate this stage, then quickly realize how demanding it becomes. Most puppies develop reliable habits within three to six months, although learning sp*ed varies based on structure and repetition.

Understanding Your Puppy's Bathroom Needs

Golden Retrievers are medium to large dogs with bladders that grow as they do. At eight weeks old, your puppy can hold their bladder for about three to four hours max. That's not a lot of time, which is why accidents happen so frequently in the beginning.

Golden Retriever Puppy Growth

Puppies Grow Too Fast Before They Grow Fat

The majority of American dogs are overweight, and many large breed puppies are developing too quickly, which puts them at risk for bone and joint issues, some of which may not manifest until much later in life.

An overfed dog will grow too quickly before becoming overly fat, unlike human children. This has frequently happened to me when two puppies from the same litter were reared in separate households. An excellent illustration is the comparison of the growth of a smaller puppy that was overfed at 10 weeks to that of a puppy that was fed properly.

Your new puppy's been home for three days. The corner of your coffee table is chewed. There's a hole in your couch cushion. One of your good running shoes is destroyed. Welcome to puppy ownership.

Yelling at them doesn't work. Puppies are going to chew something. Better to give them the right things to chew on than watch them destroy your house.

At Slater Creek Golden Retrievers, we've raised enough litters to see which dog toys actually survive and which ones last about fifteen minutes before falling apart. Every puppy goes home with toy recommendations because it's one of the first questions new owners ask.

Here's what actually works.

Puppies Chew Because They Have To

Best Puppy Toys In Today's Market

Teething hurts. Chewing helps. That's the whole reason your puppy is gnawing on everything in sight. They're not being bad, their gums hurt and chewing makes it feel better.

Adult dogs chew because it's natural, it's entertaining, and it keeps their teeth cleaner.

A woman called me yesterday morning. She'd picked up one of our golden retriever puppies about two months ago, and the puppy had been throwing up since the night before. She was freaking out, ready to rush to the emergency vet. I asked what she'd been feeding him. Turns out she ran out of the food we sent home with her, couldn't remember what brand it was, so she grabbed something different at the grocery store and filled his bowl. That was yesterday afternoon.

Her puppy was fine - just had an upset stomach from the sudden food change. But she didn't know that switching dog food overnight is basically guaranteed to cause problems. Most people don't realize this until they learn the hard way.

I've been breeding golden retrievers here in Colorado for years, and food transitions come up constantly. Sometimes people need to switch because the food I recommended isn't working out. Sometimes they're moving from puppy food to adult. Sometimes they just want to try something else.

Golden retrievers weren't bred to be family pets that fetch tennis balls in suburban backyards. They were developed in Scotland during the 1800s to retrieve waterfowl during hunting expeditions. That working drive still exists in well-bred lines, which is why hunters in Colorado continue choosing these dogs for upland game and waterfowl work. Training hunting dogs properly means understanding what golden retrievers were built to do and how Colorado's terrain affects their performance.

Finding golden retriever puppies from Colorado breeders specifically bred for hunting ability requires different criteria than picking a family companion. Show lines and working lines have diverged over decades. Show dogs often have thicker coats, blockier heads, and calmer temperaments.

Working golden retrievers tend to be leaner, more athletic, and possess a stronger prey drive. Both are purebred goldens, but they serve different purposes.

We brought our first golden retriever puppy home on a Thursday in October, and I'm pretty sure I spent the first three days wondering what we'd gotten ourselves into. The house wasn't ready. I thought it was ready, but it absolutely wasn't.

If you're searching for golden retriever puppies for sale and getting close to actually bringing one home, let me save you some of the mistakes we made. Colorado adds some wrinkles you might not think about if you're new to having dogs here. Altitude, weather that changes by the hour, wildlife in your backyard—it's different than prepping for a puppy in, say, Florida.

The thing is, you can't really prepare your home for a puppy and cover every scenario. They'll find something to chew that you never considered. They'll p*e somewhere you thought was impossible. But getting the obvious stuff handled ahead of time means you're not scrambling while you're already exhausted.

Moved to Colorado Springs three years ago with my golden retriever Murphy, and honestly, it's been amazing watching him thrive out here. The mountains, the trails, the snow - he's living his best life.

That said, Colorado's unique climate does require some adjustments. If you've got golden retrievers or you're planning to bring golden retriever puppies to Colorado, here's what I've learned about helping them enjoy everything this beautiful state has to offer.

Why Colorado Is Special for Dogs

Colorado weather keeps things interesting. You get all four seasons, sometimes in the same week! That variety means your golden retriever gets to experience different types of outdoor fun year-round.

The elevation is something to appreciate. We're at 6,000 feet in the Springs, Denver sits at 5,280, and mountain towns go even higher. New puppies need a little time to adjust to the thinner air, just like people do. Once they acclimate, though, they build incredible stamina.

So you're about to go pick out a puppy and you're freaking out a little because what if you choose wrong? What if the perfect puppy is right there and you somehow miss it and end up with the dud?

First off, there's no dud. They're puppies. They're all great. But yeah, there are differences, and some puppies are genuinely better fits for certain families than others.

I've been through this twice now—once when I had no idea what I was doing and once after I'd learned some stuff the hard way.

Whether you're looking at Slater Creek Golden Retriever puppies in Colorado or checking out puppies for sale from any breeder, the same basic rules apply.

Let me tell you what I wish someone had told me before my first puppy visit.

Are You Looking For The Perfect Puppy For Your Family?

They're Not Ready When They're Born (Obviously)

You can't just roll up when the puppies are two weeks old and grab one. Well, you could, but any decent breeder would throw you out.
