Your new golden is home, the crate is set up, and now there's a bag of kibble on the counter and a puppy staring at you like she hasn't eaten in a week. She has. She just doesn't care.

Here's the schedule in one breath. From 8 to 12 weeks, feed three or four small meals a day. Somewhere between 3 and 6 months, drop to three.

Between 6 and 12 months, go to two meals, which is where most goldens stay for life. The switch from puppy food to adult food usually comes between 12 and 18 months, and big males often stay on puppy food a bit longer.

Between 4 and 12 weeks of age, a Golden Retriever puppy needs about 20 hours of sleep, and by the time they're about six months of age, they need about 16 hours of sleep.

So, let them have their nap. The more energy that they burn, the crazier they go, and then they'll crash really hard. And if we don't let them sleep, then that's when they become little mini terrors. Overstimulated puppies are what you want to avoid.

We want to make sure this goes smoothly because we don't want to traumatize a young puppy; we also don't want to stress out an older dog. Usually, what to do to start is do it through a fence or some kind of a barrier; that way you're sure that nothing is going to happen.

If your older dog has issues with aggression, then consult a trainer and have a trainer help you and come out to the house, because you want to make sure that it goes right.

When you're introducing the puppy to an adult dog, you always want to make sure the puppy has a way to get away from the adult dog because you don't want to overwhelm a young puppy. Get the adult dog behind a barrier and walk over with the puppy and let him come up and sniff.
