What’s the difference between a service dog, emotional support dog, and a therapy dog?
The biggest difference is that service dogs are regulated by the Americans with Disabilities Act. These dogs must be trained to perform specific tasks in order to aid their handler’s disability. That “trained task” part is crucial! Simply “providing emotional support” or “relieving anxiety” doesn’t cut the mustard here. Some examples of trained tasks are:
- Guiding a blind or visually impaired person
- Alerting a deaf person to a noise
- Detecting allergens like gluten or nuts
- Retrieving items
- Alerting to medical issues like changes in blood sugar, heart rate, or emotional status
- Detecting migraines
Service Dogs are required by law to accompany their handlers almost anywhere, with very few exceptions. The dog must be under the control of its handler at all times and must not be disruptive by barking, jumping on other people, or having potty accidents.
Under ADA law, Service Dogs are NOT required to wear a vest, collar, or other piece of equipment identifying them as service dogs.
There is also NO LEGAL REGISTRY of service dogs in the United States! Although many businesses exist online that function as “service dog registries,” they are not recognized officially by the ADA. Essentially, they are scams meant to trick people into thinking all they have to do is register their dog as a service dog with them and then boom- they can accompany them everywhere.
Businesses and other facilities ARE allowed to ask two questions if they see a dog in an area that does not allow pets:
1. Is this a service dog?
2. What task or tasks is this dog trained to perform?
Handlers cannot be asked about their disabilities, nor are they required to demonstrate the dog’s tasks. In fact, requiring documentation, asking about the handler’s medical or psychiatric conditions, and asking to see the dog perform their task are strictly prohibited by regulations like HIPPA.
