Fisher Animal Hospital

Fisher Animal Hospital Welcome to Fisher Animal Hospital's page! To be accredited by AAHA, our practice must demonstrate an exceptional level of care for our patients.

We are the only veterinary practice in Florence accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association, and have been for 50 years. AAHA's rigorous standards cover every aspect of a companion animal hospital, which means that the veterinary service you receive from an AAHA accredited practice is among the finest. To maintain our status as an AAHA accredited practice, our health care team voluntari

ly undergoes a periodic, comprehensive on-site evaluation. We believe it keeps us on the leading edge of veterinary medicine and focused on providing you and your pet with the quality care and range of services you expect and deserve. To ensure your pet remains healthy throughout his or her lifetime, we offer and recommend preventive care such as routine medical examinations, vaccinations, heartworm prevention, flea/tick preventives and dental care. For our senior patients, we recommend wellness screening blood work. If your pet becomes ill, we can help. Our experienced clinicians have the knowledge to assess your pet's health status and determine if further diagnostics are needed. We have the ability to perform radiographs (x-rays) to assess bone or soft tissue concerns. Our in-house laboratory allows us to get blood work results faster. We have the capability to perform abdominal ultrasonography and echocardiography (an ultrasound of the heart). We also offer gastrointestinal endoscopy, which gives us a less invasive option for diagnosing diseases of the stomach and intestines and the ability to remove certain foreign objects from the stomach without surgery. From routine surgeries, such as spaying and neutering, to more difficult procedures, such as orthopedic (bone) repairs, our doctors are experienced and proficient. Our patients are monitored throughout anesthesia and until they are fully recovered to ensure their safety. To ensure your pet's comfortable, we provide appropriate pain control. We recommend dental care for all our patients, including routine teeth brushing. During annual examinations, we perform dental examinations and recommend cleanings to remove dental tartar and plaque when appropriate. Periodontal disease (or disease pertaining to the bone, connective tissue and gums surrounding the teeth) is the most commonly diagnosed problem in dogs and cats. Periodontal disease, if left untreated, can lead to more serious problems, such as infection of the heart or kidneys.

Heat & Hydration Safety

As temperatures rise, it’s important to keep your pets cool, comfortable, and well hydrated. Dogs and cats can overheat quickly—especially during outdoor activities.

Keep your pet safe this season:
• Provide plenty of fresh, clean water
• Make sure they have access to shade
• Avoid walks during the hottest part of the day
• Test pavement before walking (if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for paws)
• Never leave pets in a parked car

Heat-related illnesses can happen fast, but a few simple precautions can make all the difference.

Important Vaccine Update Beginning June 1

At Fisher Animal Hospital, we are always reviewing the latest veterinary recommendations to help keep your pets healthy and protected.

Beginning June 1, we will be updating our canine vaccine recommendations to include the Leptospirosis vaccine as part of our core puppy vaccine series and annual vaccine protocol.

The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) now recommends Leptospirosis vaccination as part of a dog’s core vaccines. While Leptospirosis has traditionally been less common in our area, cases have become more frequent in other parts of the country in recent years.

Why this matters:
• Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can affect dogs
• It can spread through contaminated water or wildlife exposure
• It is considered a zoonotic disease, meaning it can also spread from animals to humans

Starting June 1, we will begin recommending the Leptospirosis vaccine during the 12-week and 16-week puppy vaccine visits, as well as annually thereafter.

If you have questions about this update or whether the vaccine is appropriate for your dog, our team is happy to discuss it with you.

Protect your pet with these simple steps:
• Check your pet daily for ticks after being outdoors
• Use veterinarian-recommended tick prevention year-round
• Keep grass trimmed and avoid heavily wooded areas when possible
• Stay up to date on wellness exams and prevention

Prevention is the best defense when it comes to tick-borne illness. If you have questions about the right protection for your pet, we’re here to help.
