This post is to raise awareness about a heartbreaking event a close friend is currently going through with her horses. The horse in the picture below was leased out this year and a few days ago my friend was called by the cops to come get her horses as the person she was leasing them to was caught in a severe neglect situation. It only took 3 months for her horses to get to the body weight seen in this picture! A horse’s health can easily be realized based on how they look. If you can see your horse’s RIBS (even just a little bit), then it’s time to increase their feed intake! It is currently October & the grass in everyone’s pastures are starting to die (it’s not going to grow as quickly & turns yellow), so now is the time to start putting out round bales for the winter & upping the number of flakes you throw in their stalls! Your horse’s body is focused on growing its winter coat at this point, so less nutritional grass is not going a long way for them to maintain their body weight. Also, start thinking about pulling out their blankets for when the temperature drops & look to see if they have adequate shelter for the wind & snow that will be hitting next month. Remember that there are people out there that can help give advice & more, all you have to do is send us a text!
