If your horse shoots their head up, braces, or drops behind when you ask for the canter, you are not alone. ๐Ÿ’› The good news is that most of those scary, hollow canter transitions come from a lack of preparation in the trot. In this video, I show the simple adjustments I used with Elior, an ex-jumper, so his canter transitions stayed calm, connected, and round. ๐ŸŒŸ

A hollow, braced canter means the horse is not lifting through the withers or using their topline. โš ๏ธ That makes the canter feel hard and out of control for you, and it prevents the horse from becoming balanced or using their muscles correctly. When we prepare correctly in the trot, the horse can lift the back, soften the neck, and step under with the hind legs โ€” which produces a better, safer canter.

The key to a good canter transition is preparation. ๐Ÿ’ก Before you ask, make sure your horse is soft, responsive, and moving from your inside leg to the outside rein. In the video you'll see me check that connection by yielding the horse away from my inside leg into the outside rein. I keep asking for the trot forward while widening my inside hand slightly so the horse drops the neck and really connects to the outside rein... Read all my tips and watch the video here: https://amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/how-to-keep-your-horse-round-in-the-canter-so-transitions-feel-confident-and-calm/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=Weekly+Education

If you've ever struggled with the leg yield, you're not alone. ๐Ÿ’› Many riders find it challenging to coordinate the aids, keep their horse straight, and maintain a steady rhythm through the movement. The good news is that with the right knowledge, the leg yield becomes much easier to understand and ride. ๐ŸŒŸ In this video, I'll walk you through the aids, common mistakes, and a few simple exercises that will help improve your leg yields and build a more supple, balanced horse.

The leg yield is one of the first lateral movements you'll learn in Dressage, it is introduced at First Level. ๐Ÿ“‹ It's a forward and sideways movement where your horse's body stays parallel to the long side while crossing its legs.

This exercise is valuable because it develops suppleness while encouraging your horse to become straighter and more even on both sides. โš–๏ธ Like every exercise in dressage training, it's about improving the quality of the basics rather than simply completing the movement.

Before asking for a leg yield, make sure your horse is moving forward in a steady rhythm and is moving into the contact. โœ… Those basics make everything else much easier.

One of the things I love most about Dressage is that progress doesn't have an age limit. ๐Ÿ’› In this video, I'm sharing five simple tips that have helped both me and my students continue improving as riders. These aren't complicated training techniques. They're practical ideas that can make your riding safer, more enjoyable, and more effective no matter your age or experience level. ๐ŸŒŸ

The first tip is simple but incredibly important: wear your helmet and prioritize safety. โš ๏ธ As we get older, we don't bounce as easily as when we're young. Groundwork, taking small steps, and asking for help when you need it all help keep both you and your horse safe while building confidence.

One of the best ways to continue improving is to learn out of the saddle. ๐Ÿ“ฑ Watching videos, reviewing your rides, and taking online riding courses gives you time to fully understand the concepts before trying them the next time you ride your horse.

When you're riding, you're thinking about your horse, your position, and your instructor all at once. ๐Ÿคฏ Learning away from the horse allows you to slow down, absorb the information, and return to your next ride with a clear plan.

Your rider position doesn't just improve by spending more time riding your horse. ๐Ÿค” In fact, many of the habits we struggle with in the saddle begin with the way we move every day... ๐ŸŽ‰ Welcome back to Episode 4 and the final episode of my Dressage For All series!
This month, we've celebrated the incredible variety of horses in our sport showing that Dressage is for all breeds. ๐Ÿ’› From Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses to Arabians and now a Gypsy Vanner, each horse has demonstrated how Dressage can help develop greater balance, suppleness, and athleticism. ๐ŸŽ

In this final episode, I'm working with Amber and Kelly, a beautiful Gypsy Vanner. ๐ŸŒŸ When I first started teaching this pair, Kelly struggled with balance and organization in the canter. Today, they're competing successfully through Fourth Level and beginning to develop movements that prepare for dressage pirouettes and more advanced work. ๐Ÿ†

Collection is about rebalancing your horse onto the hind end. โš–๏ธ Collection is difficult for ALL horses - regardless of the breed! One thing that is important to understand about collection is that the exercises and the system of Dressage are what teach your horse to collect.

In Amber and Kelly's lesson, we used different exercises to help Kelly develop the strength and collection needed for pirouettes. ๐Ÿ’ช Each exercise built on the one before it. We used shoulder-in, half-pass, shoulder-fore, and turns on the haunches to help Kelly become more supple through her body and more engaged behind.

One of the biggest goals was teaching her to sit more on her hind legs. โœจ As Kelly learned to bend through her ribcage and carry more weight behind, she became lighter in the front end and more balanced throughout her body... Welcome back to Episode 3 of my Dressage For All series!

This month, I'm featuring riders and horses from different breeds to go along with my mission of "Dressage for All" and making Dressage accessible to everyone who wants to learn. ๐Ÿ’› These aren't professional riders on Grand Prix horses. They're real riders working through real training challenges with horses they love. ๐ŸŽ

In this episode, I'm working with Jenny and her Half Arabian mare, Lil. ๐ŸŒŸ If you have a horse that tends to get behind the leg, break out of the canter, or require constant encouragement to stay forward, you'll find a lot of helpful lessons in this ride. We start by improving Lil's responsiveness and finish by working on flying changes. ๐Ÿ”„

One of the biggest themes of this lesson was teaching Lil to react more promptly to the aids. โšก Before you can improve collection, flying changes, or any upper-level movement, your horse must be in front of the leg.

Throughout the ride, we focused on asking with a light aid first and then following up if needed. The goal is always to teach the horse to respond to the softest possible aid. โœจ As Lil became more responsive, the quality of the canter improved. She stayed more balanced, more connected, and much more attentive to Jenny's aids. ๐Ÿ’ช

A big takeaway from this lesson is that it's easier to shape energy than it is to create it. ๐Ÿ’ก Sometimes riders are afraid of getting too much reaction, but a horse that is thinking forward gives you something to work with... ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read more and watch the video here: https://amelianewcombdressage.com/dressage-training/building-more-power-in-the-canter/?utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=Weekly+Education
