The Redbone Coonhound traces its roots back to red coated foxhounds brought to the American South by Scottish and Irish immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries. Through careful breeding, hunters developed a fast, hot-nosed hound known for its endurance, intelligence, and determination on both raccoon and big game.
Their sleek, solid red coat wasn’t just for looks, it made them easier to spot at night and in thick cover. Redbones are admired for their athleticism, strong tracking ability, and steady temperament, making them effective hunters and loyal companions.
Many people associate the breed with the beloved American novel Where the Red Fern Grows, which helped cement the Redbone Coonhound as a symbol of youth, loyalty, and the deep bond between a boy and his hounds.
