Fall is an important time to take a closer look at the whole herd.
As cattle head into winter, a fall herd health visit can be an opportunity to assess where the herd stands and prepare for the months ahead.
Depending on the operation and herd needs, a fall visit may include:
• Pregnancy checking cows to identify bred and open females
• Re-tagging animals when identification needs updated
• Deworming with a pour-on product, including bulls
• Respiratory and leptospirosis vaccination
• Scour vaccine for heifers or cows not previously vaccinated
• Body condition scoring to assess nutritional status and help place cows into better groups for winter
These pieces work together. Knowing pregnancy status, body condition, and herd health helps producers make informed decisions about nutrition, grouping, breeding, calving, and the months ahead.
Every herd has different needs, so fall herd health programs should be tailored to the individual operation and its goals.

“My dog is in heat… what does that even mean?”
If you've never had an intact female dog before, a heat cycle can be a little confusing!
A heat cycle is the time when a female dog is fertile and can become pregnant. You may notice things like:
• A swollen v***a
• Vaginal discharge or spotting
• More frequent urination
• Changes in behavior
• Increased attention from male dogs
A heat cycle is a normal part of a female dog's reproductive cycle, but it also means pregnancy is possible.
If your dog is going through her first heat—or you're simply not sure what you're seeing—our veterinary team can help you understand what's normal and what to watch for. 🐾

🍂 Fall nutrition decisions can impact next year's production.
As pasture quality declines and cattle transition toward stored forages and supplemental feed, their nutritional needs don't stay the same.

And nutrition isn't just about keeping cattle full. Meeting their nutritional needs helps maintain the body condition necessary for reproduction, calving, milk production, and healthy calf growth.

For example, a cow going into winter in poor body condition may have a harder time maintaining the condition needed for a successful breeding season and upcoming production demands.

That's why fall is a good time to evaluate more than what's in the feed bunk. Consider:
• Body condition of the herd
• Forage quality and availability
• Stage of production
• Upcoming calving and breeding goals
• Nutritional needs of different groups within the herd

A good fall nutrition plan helps set the herd up for the months ahead—not just get them through winter.

🍂 The temperatures are dropping, but flea season isn't over.
In fact, we've been seeing a LOT of flea cases this year and cooler weather doesn't necessarily mean your pet is in the clear.
As fall settles in, pets can still pick up fleas outdoors, while your home provides a warm, protected environment where fleas can continue to survive and reproduce. And for pets with flea allergies, even a small number of bites can cause a LOT of itching.
So if your pet suddenly seems itchier this fall, don't automatically blame it on the changing weather. Fleas may be part of the problem. 🐾
And don't forget about ticks! Cooler temperatures don't mean they're gone either. Some tick species remain active well into the fall and even during periods of cooler weather.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council, a group of veterinary parasite experts, recommends year-round flea and tick protection for dogs and cats.
🍁 Fall means football, bonfires, harvest, and cooler walks not a break from parasite prevention.
If your pet is suddenly itchier than usual, give us a call. We can help determine what's causing the itch and make sure your pet's parasite prevention is keeping up with the season.
