Let’s all congratulate Alaysha Brown on being accepted into the veterinary program at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. While we’ll miss having her here, we’re excited to see everything she accomplishes next.

Hey y'all. We're hiring.

Flora Animal Hospital is looking for a kennel assistant to join our team. And I'm going to be straight with you about what this job actually is.

It's not glamorous. You will get peed on. You will clean up vomit. You will deal with blood and p**p and all the things that come with working around animals. If that makes you flinch, this probably isn't your job.

But if you genuinely love animals and you can handle the real stuff, we want to talk to you.

Here's what we need:
• Must be able to lift 60 lbs.
• Must be available to work weekends.
• Vet experience is a plus, but not required.
• Pay depends on your experience.

If that sounds like you, come by and fill out an application.

Your dog got into the onion dip last night. They seem totally fine this morning. That's the problem.

Onion and garlic toxicity doesn't show up right away. Your dog can look completely normal for a day or two while the damage is already happening underneath.

Think about it like a slow leak in a tire. You drive on it all day and it seems okay, right up until it isn't. By the time you notice the symptoms, the tread is already gone.

So here's the thing. The compounds in alliums attack red blood cells and break them down. Powdered forms are the worst. Garlic powder, onion powder, soup, seasoning blends, baby food with onion powder in it. All of it counts. And by the time your dog looks pale, lethargic, or is breathing harder than normal, that window to get ahead of it has already started closing.

Don't wait for symptoms. If you know your dog got into something with onion or garlic, call us now.

No judgment on how it happened. We just need to know what and how much.

🇺🇸 Memorial Day Reminder 🇺🇸

Our office will be closed Monday in honor of Memorial Day as we pause to remember and give thanks.

Also, friendly PSA: hot dogs are for humans only! Keep those pup tummies safe this weekend and save them a dog-friendly treat instead.

Wishing you and your pets a safe holiday weekend

We’re a tad late, but the love is just as strong!

Today is National Dog Rescue Day, and we couldn’t let it pass without celebrating all the amazing pups who found their forever homes and the people who rescued them.

Rescue dogs are some of the most loyal, loving companions out there, and we’re lucky to care for so many of them here at Flora Animal Hospital.

📸👇 Drop a photo of your rescue dog in the comments and tell us a little about their story, we’d love to show them some love!

Y'all, I saw this article going around and I need to address it.

The claim is that caffeine from your coffee steam is settling into your cat's fur and poisoning them when they groom. I promise you, this is not a thing.

Caffeine boils at 351 degrees Celsius. That is way beyond anything your coffee maker is doing. The steam rising from your mug is just water. Caffeine stays put.

Here is what you actually do need to watch for. Dry grounds are the real hazard. A cat that steps in a spill and licks their paws later can easily get a dangerous dose. Used pods and grounds need to go in a trash they cannot get into. And keep your mug somewhere they are not going to knock it over and take a sip.

Caffeine is genuinely toxic to cats. Their bodies just cannot process it. So the precautions are worth taking. They just have nothing to do with steam.

If you ever have questions about what is and is not safe for your pet, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

WHAT THEY THINK: "I do not want to tell my vet everything because they will judge me."

WHY IT ISN'T TRUE: Vets are not keeping score. We just need the full picture so we can actually help your pet.

WHAT IS TRUE: The more honest you are, the faster and cheaper we can get your pet feeling better.

WHY IT'S TRUE: Every test we run is based on the information you give us. Wrong information means wrong tests, which means more time and more money before we land on the right answer.

PROOF: A dog came in last week and we ran a full workup chasing the wrong diagnosis. Turns out Fluffy ate yarn. If we had known that walking in the door, we would have been done in half the time for half the cost.

No judgment here. Just tell us what happened.

Do you walk w/ your dog? Do you take them fishing? Maybe you bring them to work, or maybe you just sit outside w/ them and watch the cars drive by. We would love to hear all about it. Extra points for pics.

What if your pet could tell you where it hurts? They can't.
And that silence is the hardest part of veterinary medicine.

Your pet feels everything. They just have no way to tell us. So we piece it together from the exam, the diagnostics, and what you noticed at home.

It's like tracking a deer you never saw. You follow the signs, read the ground, and trust what the trail is telling you.

You're the one who knows the trail. Every detail you notice at home, no matter how small, is a track we can follow.

Call us. Tell us everything. Let us figure out the rest.

Not every dental product at the pet store is worth your money. A few of them are not worth your dog's health either.

We're breaking down exactly which at-home dental options we actually recommend, what the difference is between them, and which ones she has seen work on real patients right here in Flora, MS.

The short version: look for the VOHC seal. The Veterinary Oral Health Council independently tests products and only certifies the ones that actually reduce plaque or tartar. If the product does not have that seal, it is making a claim nobody has verified.

What we use and recommend: OraVet dental chews, Vetradent water additives, and enzymatic toothpastes. Because every household is different, we offer a variety of options

If you are going to spend money on your pet's teeth, spend it on something that does something.

Call us at (601) 879-3222 or visit floraanimalhospital.com to ask which option fits your pet.
