A soft bump on a puppy's belly, usually right at the navel, is most often an umbilical hernia.

Most of these hernias are small and can be planned for during routine care rather than treated as an urgent matter. A small one is often repaired when the puppy is spayed or neutered, under the same anesthesia.

A bump that turns firm, painful or suddenly bigger is different. That needs to be seen by a vet right away.

For older dogs we recommend a wellness exam twice a year instead of once. Six months is long enough for things to move — kidney values, dental disease, a joint, a heart sound.

Our senior dog wellness exam page walks through what we check: a complete blood count, chemistry panel and urinalysis run in our own in-house lab, a full nose-to-tail physical, a mobility and comfort check, and a dental assessment at every senior visit. Because the lab is in this building, you usually talk through the bloodwork with Dr. Singh before you leave.

Getting a cat into the carrier is usually the hardest part of the appointment.

A week before the visit, put the carrier out in the room where your cat sleeps, door open, with a familiar towel inside. Drop a few treats in it. By appointment day it's furniture instead of a trap.

One low thyroid number on a dog's bloodwork isn't a diagnosis on its own.

Other illness, some medications and normal breed differences can all push that number down in a dog whose thyroid is working fine. So a low result gets read alongside the exam, the rest of the bloodwork, and what your dog has been doing at home.

If your middle-aged dog has slowed down, put on weight without eating more, or has a thinning coat that doesn't itch, that's worth bringing up at the next visit.

"She never goes outside — does she still need to come in?" We're asked that often, and the answer is yes: once a year at minimum, twice for a senior cat.

Cats are good at hiding illness. Dental disease, early kidney changes, quiet weight loss and heart murmurs are all things we find on routine exams in cats whose owners thought nothing was wrong. Fleas and mosquitoes get indoors too, so prevention still applies.
