Why a 4-Week Trim Schedule Matters

The hidden cost of pushing horses to 5–6 weeks

One of the most overlooked management decisions horse owners make is how often their horse’s hooves are trimmed. While a 5–6 week schedule has become common, it often works against the horse’s biomechanics—especially when we look at what happens after week four.

What happens after week four?

After the four-week mark, hoof growth begins to outpace mechanical balance.
• Angulation begins to change by ~2° per week
• For every 1° of angle change, soft-tissue strain increases by ~4%

That means by week six, a horse may be carrying significantly more strain through:
• Tendons
• Ligaments
• The navicular region
• The suspensory system

This isn’t theory—it’s biomechanics.

The risks of 5–6 week schedules

When trims are stretched too far apart, we commonly see:
• Long toes and delayed breakover
• Underrun or collapsing heels
• Broken hoof-pastern axes
• Increased tripping and stumbling
• Compensatory movement patterns
• Higher likelihood of soft-tissue injuries
• Greater dependency on injections or maintenance therapies

In short: the body pays the price for delayed hoof maintenance.

The benefits of a 4-week schedule (year-round)

A consistent 4-week schedule allows farriers to stay ahead of distortion, rather than chasing it.

Key benefits include:
• Better control of hoof angles
• Reduced soft-tissue strain
• Improved breakover and movement efficiency
• Less stress on joints and tendons
• Fewer corrective trims needed over time
• More consistent comfort and performance

Instead of correcting problems every visit, we’re maintaining balance.

One size does NOT fit all

Every horse is an individual. Some may tolerate minor variation, others cannot. But no horse benefits from excessive angle changes. A 4-week cycle gives us the flexibility to adjust before small changes become big problems.

Bottom line

Waiting 5–6 weeks between trims may seem convenient—but convenience should never come at the cost of a horse’s long-term soundness.

A 4-week trim schedule isn’t about upselling—it’s about:
āœ” biomechanics
āœ” injury prevention
āœ” longevity
āœ” responsible horsemanship

Your horse stands on their feet 24/7.
Keeping them balanced is not optional—it’s essential.

Is ā€œBreakoverā€ a Myth? Let’s Talk Facts.

In 2026, the word breakover has oddly become controversial in some farrier circles.
Many farriers cringe when they hear it.

Jeff Mangone, APF II of Forge Fate Farrier Service, doesn’t.

And here’s why.

Over the past several years, we’ve seen a growing trend—almost a pandemic—of horses being left with excessively long toes under the excuse of ā€œfull perimeterā€ or ā€œletting the foot be the foot.ā€ While respecting the hoof’s natural shape is important, problems arise when the toe is never addressed and proper breakover is ignored.

Breakover Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Every horse is an individual.

Some horses benefit from the toe being brought back close to the white line.
Others only need the toe eased back halfway.

The key point is this:
There is no universal standard for shoeing or trimming every horse the same way.

Jeff’s approach is simple and consistent:
• Evaluate the horse as an individual
• Assess movement, conformation, workload, and history
• Apply breakover where that specific horse needs it

What Happens When the Toe Is Left Too Long?

Failing to bring the toe back and refusing to acknowledge the need for breakover can lead to serious, long-term consequences:
1. Increased tripping and forging issues
2. Added strain on tendons and ligaments, increasing injury risk
3. Higher likelihood of joint stress and injections
4. Overall body misalignment, affecting shoulders, back, and hind end

These are not cosmetic issues—they are soundness and longevity issues.

The Goal: Prevention, Not Reaction

Proper breakover is not about trends or buzzwords.
It’s about:
• Reducing stress on the limb
• Improving efficiency of movement
• Keeping horses comfortable and working longer

Ignoring these principles doesn’t make them disappear—it just delays the consequences.

At Forge Fate Farrier Service, Jeff Mangone, APF II believes in:
• Educated, horse-first decisions
• Individualized hoof care
• Preventing problems before they require veterinary intervention

Because good farriery isn’t about following a script—it’s about reading the horse in front of you.
